About this product

Product Information

Anthony Powell's universally acclaimed epic creates a rich panorama of twentieth-century London. 'He is, as Proust was before him, the great literary chronicler of his culture in his time.' GUARDIAN 'A Dance to the Music of Time' is universally acknowledged as one of the great works of English literature. Reissued now in this definitive edition, it stands ready to delight and entrance a new generation of readers. In this first volume, Nick Jenkins is introduced to the ebbs and flows of life at boarding school in the 1920s, spent in the company of his friends- Peter Templer, Charles Stringham, and Kenneth Widmerpool. Though their days are filled with visits from relatives and boyish pranks, usually at the expense of their housemaster Le Bas, a disastrous trip in Templer's car threatens their new friendship. As the school year comes to a close, the young men are faced with the prospects of adulthood, and with finding their place in the world.

Item arrived fast, well-packaged and in excellent condition, and was exactly as described. More than that, communication was good, and when I had a problem paying immediately due to a computer/server issue, I explained to the seller that there would be a delay and they were courteous in the extreme and very patient. I'm extremely happy with this seller.

I paid less than £20 for a book I haven’t been able to find online for less than £50, and the shipping was FREE from the US to the UK. I took a gamble buying this book considering the price, the fact it was listed as “used” and the photos advertised. I was expecting to receive a book that showed at least minor signs of wear and tear, if not major signs, but the book arrived today less than 2 weeks of me ordering in perfect condition and still sealed?! WOW. Amazing seller, thank you so much!!!

  • An excellent first volume in the "Dance to the Music of Time" saga

This first volume of Anthony Powell's "Dance to the Music of Time" covers the schooldays and university career of the protagonist, Nick Jenkins. We also meet a variety of intersting characters - Charles Stringham, Peter Templer, Kenneth Widmerpool, Sillery, Quiggin et al. . There is much comedy, some of it in the style of P.G. Wodehouse, for example, the "incident involving Stripling and Farebrother's hat box and the "Braddock alias Thorne" joke played on housemaster Le Bas. Powell's amusing descriptive powers are impressive (e.g. his description of the taxi, p. 122). There is also a wistful element in the passing of time and the gradual loss of old friends and acquaintances.
