In my opinion this film is a fantastic representation of life in the britsh navy during the Napoleonic period of history. Russel Crowe is superb and perfectly cast as the lead character Jack Aubrey, with Paul Bettany doing a sterling job as Stephen Maturin. The film is not for everyone however, if your expecting a swashbuckling action packed adventure then you will be disapointed. The film is the story of a british frigate "HMS Surprise" and it's epic task to hunt down and destroy or capture a french privateer called the "Acheron". The french frigate is a larger more powerful ship, and the pursuit will take the British crew to the edge of their limits. The chemistry between Crowe and Bettany's characters is exactly what you would expect if your a fan of the books, and in this film really tests the characters friendship when duty calls. Watch out for the clever twist at the end.Read full review
okay here goes master and commander is a action packed sword fighting film, if you like swords and sale ships then you will love this film. just like anyother film it has it's good and it's bad parts but overall a good film, i got this film for my sister, upon reaserching the film i found out that this is one of three books by Patrick O'Brian in my opinion a very worth while watch.
A very good historical movie. The plot about two war ships trying to outsmart each other and destroy the other one is basically simple, but the way it is told is so rich, that it feels like a lot more. I know that this movie is renowned for its historical accuracy, and after having seen it, I can totally believe that. It is incredibly detailed, and while watching it, I could totally imagine that it really had been like that on a ship. The circumstances, as you might imagine, were pretty harsh, but everyone seemed to think it was normal. For example, there were quite a lot of kids on the ship, young boys of maybe 11, 12. As the movie goes on, you realize they're not like the normal sailors. They wear slightly nicer clothes, and one of them is addressed as Lord, and at several points you see them being taught stuff, a small school class. They are of course the sons of nobelmen, and this is how they are trained to become captains one day themselves. It just seemed surreal to see the boys in that enviroment, and even more surreal to see the responsibility they're being given in battle. But it kind of makes sense - that is how those kids used to grow up. Russell Crowe is awesome as usual. His acting is pretty consistent throughout his movies, and this one is no difference. I also like that he learnt to play violin just for the one or two small scenes in the movie where his character does. :P I also loved the relationship between the captain and the ship's doctor. The doctor is not a naval/marine guy, and he doesn't always understand the tradition and mentality, which makes those two very interesting. All in all, enjoyable movie! Even though I get seasick like no other, this movie luckily didn't bring it on! ;)Read full review
