Synopsis
Walker Evans (1903-1975) and Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) belonged to the same generation and shared an insatiable intellectual curiosity., Walker Evans (1903-1975) and Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908-2004) belonged to the same generation and shared an insatiable intellectual curiosity. This book draws a parallel between the photographs on America made by Evans and Cartier-Bresson in the period from 1928 to 1948. Evans was well-established, had already published Let Us Now Praise Famous Men with James Agee, and was at work on Many Are Called. Cartier-Bresson, on the other hand, was just beginning his new career as a photographer. Although they both approached their work as a form of social criticism, imbued with references to literature and painting, their practices were always quite distinct., This book draws a parallel between the photographs on America made by Evans and Cartier-Bresson in the period from 1928 to 1948. Evans was well-established, had already published Let Us Now Praise Famous Men with James Agee, and was at work on Many Are Called . Cartier-Bresson, on the other hand, was just beginning his new career as a photographer. Although they both approached their work as a form of social criticism, imbued with references to literature and painting, their practices were always quite distinct., Walker Evans and Henri Cartier-Bresson belonged to the same generation and shared an insatiable intellectual curiosity. Their works had been exhibited together in 1935 at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York and they shared a period working in America when Cartier-Bresson spent eighteen months between 1946 and 1947 preparing his show at The Museum of Modern Art. This book draws a parallel between the work about America made by Evans and Cartier-Bresson in the period from 1930 to 1947. As John Szarkowski argued, 'Evans defined in his work the essence of the documentary aesthetic.' Cartier-Bresson, on the other hand, was making a fresh start, leaving behind his work in moving imagery and fully embracing a career as a stills photographer. But they were both approaching their work as a form of social criticism, imbued with references to literature and painting. Photograph America presents an opportunity to confront and compare the visions of both of these seminal photographic masters at once.

- 0***r (1)- Feedback left by buyer.Past 6 monthsVerified purchaseOrder came earlier than I expected. It was packed well and nothing was broken, despite the box obviously not handled with care. The vintage plates were as described, although the crazing on a couple was a little more obvious than I expected. PLEASE NOTE the seller pointed out the crazing and had photos. The price for 8 plates of Franciscan Desert Rose was fantastic.Franciscan “Desert Rose” Set of 8 Earthenware Dinner Plates 10 5/8” Read Details (#116470774166)
- _***9 (4)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThis was one of those "Once in a lifetime" purchases that if it hadn't been for Bayster's hard work and follow-through, things could have been much worse. As short as I can make the story: the Post Office lost this shipment. Bayster jumped in immediately and got things back on track and communicated with me each step of the way. I received this Buck Knife in a very reasonable time. Thank you Bayster for everything that you did to make this into a very positive experience!!!Reply from: bayster- Feedback replied to by seller bayster.- Feedback replied to by seller bayster. Thanks for your patience with this one.
