Spectacular low light performance tack sharp for a zoom

Beautiful images at the wife angle side of focal length spectrum. I went with a zoom because I wanted some versatility and I am not disappointed at the sharpness across the entire spread. Great low light performance.

  • Most critical review

Probably my biggest disappointment from Canon lenses

I bought this lens as an upgrade from my current 17-40/4L lens. But now I'm not sure which lens should I keep. The only advantage of 16-35 is f2.8, which can come in handy for night pictures. In comparison to 17-40/4L: 16-35 is better at wide end at f4-f5.6, 17-40 is better in all other cases. The 16-35 is especially terrible at 35mm on the edges until you set the aperture to at least f9, then the results are "ok". The build quality is very good and I hope this won't struggle so much with dust collection from the inside of the first optical element which applies for 17-40. So I was expecting excellent lens for this price range, but got just a mediocre one.

  • Best lens ever

Quite simply this is the best lens I have ever owned. I recently out it on a new 5DS R and the photo quality is amazing. I hemmed and hawed over price but am now so glad I spent more money on a high quality camera and lens. Best investment ever.

  • Sharp, quick and clear. Feels solid and gives solid results

This is a premium lens by Canon. I have moved from cheaper Canon lenses to the L range and have not been disappointed. I've only had a chance to use this 16-35 ii a few times but it has already proven itself. I have used it indoors at a boy's 3rd birthday and it's given sharp, bright results. Focusing is quick and tracking keeps up with energetic children. Outside I have not got to landscapes yet, but it gives great effects on close-up. This may overtake my 24-105 as the main lens on my camera. Sure, it costs, but for me I think it will pay for itself in no time.

  • Most universal wide-angle Canon Lens!

While I looked at other third party lenses, the bulbous front lens was not practical for outdoor sports as the risk of getting hit or scratched was pretty immenent. The newer Canon 16-35 III was pricey for what I wanted, though reviews raved on corner to corner sharpness. Well, if you are too close to the subject at f/2.8, the more distant corners will be outside the DOF, and of course, softer. To me, this lens is sharp enough and hard to tell the difference, besides the bigger cost. I needed a good wide angle zoom for my Canon 1DX2 or 1DX, and this is a perfect lens for my general purpose use for sports and events.

  • A super lense.

I can't fault it. Pin sharp images even in low light situations. For landscape and street photography I couldn't have asked for better!

  • Early days but......

I bought this lens as I am going to Norway in March, hopefully to see and photograph the Northern Lights, so wanted a wide angle lens which would let in a lot of light. I have a Canon EOS 5d mk ii so this lens seemed ideal. It was delivered last week so I haven't really had a lot of opportunity to use it - but I played with it on Monday with the 'super moon' and was delighted with the results. Looking forward to using it more over the winter.
