About this product

Product Information

The Women's Prize for Fiction Shortlist The Guardian First Book Award Shortlist The International IMPAC Dublin Literary Awards Shortlist Iceland, 1829 - Agnes Magnusdottir is condemned to death for her part in the brutal murder of her lover. Agnes is sent to wait out her final months on the farm of district officer Jon Jonsson, his wife and their two daughters. Horrified to have a convicted murderer in their midst, the family avoid contact with Agnes. Only Toti, the young assistant priest appointed Agnes's spiritual guardian, is compelled to try to understand her. As the year progresses and the hardships of rural life force the household to work side by side, Agnes's story begins to emerge and with it the family's terrible realization that all is not as they had assumed. Based on actual events, Burial Rites is an astonishing and moving novel about the truths we claim to know and the ways in which we interpret what we're told. In beautiful, cut-glass prose, Hannah Kent portrays Iceland's formidable landscape, in which every day is a battle for survival, and asks, how can one woman hope to endure when her life depends upon the stories told by others? Inspired by a true story, Burial Rites is perfect for fans of Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood and The Lifeboat by Charlotte Rogan. 'Outstanding' - Madeline Miller 'Sublime' - Sunday Telegraph 'One of the most gripping, intriguing and unique books I've read this year' - Kate Mosse

As usual, this seller is completely trustworthy: the book was as described, terrific value, arrived very swiftly from America, well packaged and safe. It was an old library book, but in great condition and appearance, and there can be no criticism, simply thanks and praise for a job well done.

Book as specified (and in good condition), fast delivery (from USA to UK), and a reasonable price for the book. The book appears to have been procured and shipped via a third party. One point of constructive criticism: I feel it would be helpful to try to work with the associate book-selling businesses (third party shippers) that you work with, to ensure that higher-value books are shipped in better quality packaging, and in particular, cardboard packaging.

  • Almost New

This book arrived on time and is in very good condition. I have read it and would recommend it. Tremendous research been done about Iceland.

  • A dark but compelling tale

This is a dark tale which is very well written, with impressive attention to historical detail. We learn a great deal about how ordinary people lived in Iceland in the early 1800's, with very little technology and simple tools, The writer's style is almost poetic which adds to the enchantment of the read.

  • Not read it yet

The book got delivered on time. I have used this service many times. But the book itself had damage. The spine of book is broken and the pages are loose so book condition not very good.

  • Worth reading

This book is worth reading for the historical and social side of the plot. The characters are interesting and in many ways desperate in their plight for just living let alone the other factors that are brought into the story.
