A wonderful debut, written with real spirit and gusto. Anita Anand has produced a winner' William Dalrymple. Sophia, god-daughter of Queen Victoria, was raised a genteel aristocratic Englishwoman: presented at court, afforded grace-and-favour lodgings at Hampton Court Palace and photographed wearing the latest fashions for the society pages.
I found the story fascinating. Interesting on many levels. The relationship with the British royals, Sophia’s fascination with the suffragette movement and what the suffragettes went through to get the vote and yet many women today don’t even bother voting. How the Sikh royals were treated by the British Government and of course the sibling relationships, made a very interesting read.
Manages to relate the complicated, fascinating and historically significant story of this woman’s life whilst being as easy to read as any novel. Well done!
