About this product

Product Information

Driving Over Lemons is that rare thing: a funny, insightful book that charms you from the first page to the last. and one that makes running a peasant farm in Spain seem like a distinctly good move. Chris transports us to Las Alpujarras, an oddball region south of Granada, and into a series of misadventures with an engaging mix of peasant farmers and shepherds, New Age travellers and ex-pats. The hero of the piece, however, is the farm that he and Ana bought, El Valero - a patch of mountain studded with olive, almond and lemon groves, sited on the wrong side of a river, with no access road, water supply or electricity. Could life offer much better than that? 'An idyllic life in a remote, sunny part of Europe is a fantasy normally punctured by harsh realities, and abandoned. Chris is made of sterner stuff. Driving Over Lemons is a wonderful account of his Andalucian adventure.' Peter Gabriel, former Genesis bandmate

Good read and a recommendation for living in Spain.

The name of the book I picked up while listening to the author's back story. Original drummer in Genesis etc. Thought the book might be a good read. Cannot put it down and have got well into the book. Well written and the story of living in Spain while overcoming all the accompanying problems and shortages including no electrical water or gas service is a delight.

  • A wonderful journey through a place called Andalucia.

I'd tried previously to buy the book about 6 months ago after hearing about it on a cooking programme but couldn't get hold of a copy anywhere, by chance overheard someone mention it again, looked and found a copy for sale and then couldn't wait for it to arrive. Sat down that evening with a cup of coffee and book in hand and 85 pages later.. and I'm not a fast reader. I couldn't wait for the following day to arrive so I could pick up where I'd left off. Took me 3 days to read, had me captured in the story from the first to last page, just wish i'd had the courage to do the same thing 30 years ago. The end of the book does seem to come to a sudden stop, and i was left wondering what was going to happen next, did wonder if the author had done this on purpose so 20 years later could do ...

  • Life in the Alpujarras

A brilliant account of life in proper rural southern Spain. The author captures the ups and downs in moving and living and farming in Andalucia away from the costas.

  • First Class Moving-Abroad Debut Autobiography

I first read this book when it was first published and it's an entertaining and engaging read. One of my recommended reads. I purchased the book again recently because it was missing from my bookshelf (and I retain a small trove of favourite books which I will lend out, then forget who had it). As you might imagine, I found the original copy before even the new one arrived! However, it is just as worth having two copies, knowing me!

  • Wonderful book - highly recommended

Wonderful story of a young couple setting up a new life in Andalucia. A timeless classic, which I've read twice in the past and now wish to read again only to find my original book has gone astray,
