This was a very enjoyable film starring Cuba Gooding Jr. as a really "Hot Shot" lawyer who goes up against a local millionaire in a New Orleans courtroom. His client is guilty as hell in the murder of a hooker, but because he is rich and politically connected, he uses his power to go after the lawyer. After being disbarred, and becoming a pariah to the legal industry, Gooding moves to Florida and buys a fishing boat, and becomes a fishing charter captain. He is going to write a book about his cases, but after a year, still hasn't gotten past the first page. His publisher hounding him for his manuscript, has him even more stifled. One day, a old man who was a retired teacher, contacts him and wants to go fishing. He shows up in a suit, and doesn't seem to have any ides about fishing. He is a nice old guy though, and his stories are interesting. He and Gooding instantly become friends and talk of many things. The old man invites Gooding over and when Gooding arrives he finds this old man dead of an apparent heart attack. He also finds a typed manuscript of a book in the old guys possessions. After finding out that he had died with no relatives at all, and that all of his possessions were just to be burned anyway, he reads the book. It is a mystery thriller about someone killing for revenge - killing lawyers! The manuscript is marvelous. It is just the book that he would write if he had the talent to do so. He feels that it would be a best seller! . . .Why Not? . . .Who would ever know? . . .Just like that, he is retyping the title page, with his name as the author. His publicist LOVES the book and it instantly becomes a BEST SELLER! Fame and notoriety are his, and now everybody is anticipating his next book. Instead, he is suddenly arrested by the police for multiple murders, - all exactly chronicled in the book, sort of like a "How I did it" book, with exact knowledge as to how the murders were committed. He has now gone from best selling author to prime candidate for the electric chair. Who would believe this story? The answer was, NOBODY! Using his knowledge and experience, he retraces his steps back to Florida, back to the old man. . .who never existed! Everything led to a dead end, to the realization that this whole thing was just an elaborate set-up, and all roads lead back to New Orleans. . . The follow up of his investigation, and making the case against the evidence contains some real twists and turns. This is a real "Who Done It". I enjoyed it and I'm sure you will too!Read full review
This movie would be Exceptional if it were not rated "R". If they would have skipped the curse words and the partial nudity, it would have been so much better. Within the first five minutes, I lost count of the swear words, it distracted me from the plot of the movie which was pretty suspenseful. It would have been a 5 star movie for me if it was rated PG.
