    Wonderful, especially with chips!

You're seen the film, you've eaten the potatoes... now read the book and find out how much you've missed! This is a gripping technothriller along the lines of Apollo 13 and Marooned, in which one man has to survive on Mars, possibly for several years. That's basically the plot, where this excels is in making it feel real and conveying the sheer isolation and desperation of the situation, and the skills needed to survive in such a hostile environment. The film couldn't cover a lot of the material in the book, and simplified several key issues - for much of the book the hero has no contact with Earth, and several other important problems were completely omitted. That isn't to say it's perfect - the hero completely ignores at least one resource that is definitely in his area of expertise ...

  • Out of this world - thank heavens!

What can I say - have read it 3 times already and it stays by my chair - so any time I want to I can go back to Mars (and escape 'modern life'). It's every bit as good as the film (which I saw first - several times) but some slight differences which are interesting in themselves.

  • Everyone should read this book

Wish I hadn’t seen the film first but everyone who likes space, adventure or physics will love this book. My teenage son is desperate to read it after me and I know he’s going to love it too. Can’t rate it highly enough

  • Exciting , haven't seen the film though,so can't compare.

On the edge of your seat reading, still up there with the top books, even after all these years.

  • fantastic book

Absolutely brilliant book so far, I'm not sure how realistic the science behind everything that happensis, but it reads great and keeps you immersed throughout the different perspectives and characters.
