I must admit I was surprised when I first saw this unit listed on EBAY for its low starting price. I first became familiar with this unit back in the late 1990's. This would have made a perfect main system for my home back then. It's near $1500.00 retail price tag forced me to look at other lower priced options. This is a nearly full featured unit with a powerful, low distortion amplifier. It features a hefty power transformer to run its many powerful features. Most amplifiers today use a high frequency "chopper" driven power supply that reduces the need for a big, heavy power transformer. I'm from the old school though and prefer my amplifiers big and heavy. The only down side to this unit is its lack of optical (fiberoptic) connectivity and its over sized tiny button remote. The remote is full featured and duplicates all of the front panel controls and then some! Yamah has a new remote that works kinda like a wireless mouse. It responds to slight movements of the wrist and on screen commands to set the desired options. This doesn't have that though. Yamah could have included a simplified remote contol with this unit for everyday command functions. It would have made the remote's overall size and access to controls much simpler. I am well pleased with my purchase. I am using it as a surround amplifier for my new flat panel LCD TV set. This is a perfect application for that use. This is an excellent performing unit if you can purchase it at a good price. I was lucky! If you want power and functionality without the HDMI and fiberoptic connectivity, this is a fine standard to reference what your looking for!Read full review
Buy another verrsion of Yamaha,Not worth the money. Although there are Quite a few sound adjustments can be made for tweaking, the time necessary to shift through the commands are terrible. Does not play loud enough. My older, less expensive Yamaha 530RX plays louderr and betterr than this unit. The best part about this unit is the various sound effects for movies. Otherwise, shop for a different unit by Yamaha.
Unit has nicely defined layout. I really like the ability to close the lower panel for the rarely used controls/connections. Gives the unit a cleaner appearance, not too cluttered. This is an older unit, so not any digital connections, but it does have higher grade S-video and component. Unit comes usually with 2 remote controls for other-room use. Hard to come by features like this nowadays at good Ebay prices, even for more current models. All in all, I am enjoying a nice sound from my existing CD storage unit, as well as video connection. As other reviews and critics have noticed, the Yamaha unit offers less listening-fatigue, perhaps because there's actually less questionable and irritable moments in the sounds from dissonance or distortions.
Great Yamaha receiver. It can be used in 5.1 mode or by switching a button on the rear panel in 7.1 mode. 100 watts per channel gives plenty of power to feel movies like you are in a movie theater. It has lots of features and many sound options. Great AM/FM reception and, on top of that, it can be used as a pre-amp by removing the rear pre-amp jumpers. I would suggest, however, to connect this receiver to a proper set of Yamaha surround set of speakers. My RX-V2090, purchased at an Estate sale, came without speakers. Yamaha suggested the NS-777 (main), the NS-333 (front and rear) and the NS-C444 (as center speaker). When I connected the receiver to these speakers (I also chose a Yamaha 130 watt subwoofer) the movies, music and the radio stations became alive. This receiver cost $1,400.00 a some years ago. There must be a reason for the high price. I am very happy with it and would like to recommend it to anyone.Read full review
I have no idea how to account for last reviewer's comment about volume....I have never had the gain control on mine up past 9 o'clock. It is a 400 watt receiver, not 100 as written above. Plenty of power, and I am driving some hefty Definitave towers, a sub, center channel and rear speakers. I have owned my unit since late 90's and it has performed perfectly with no issues. Plenty of options for sound field processing, Dolby pro logic etc, and 5.1 surround. No HDMI connections of course. Cost was $1500 new. Good value and good choice if your budget is a couple of hundred dollars.
