      Velo Plugs

      Have used these for about 7 years instead of rim tape. They prevent pinch flats from spoke holes and are significantly lighter than rim tape. Never had one fail or come out. But easy to get out if needed. Good product.

      Great idea, poor execution

      I have used Veloplugs on at least 3 sets of wheels. I used to really love them, until my recent wheel build where when I wondered why it was so hard to mount my wire bead tires. I like to train on wire bead and mount Kevlar tires for special trips or for performance events. The Veloplugs add distance to the inner diameter of the inner bed of the rim, which makes mounting tires harder - especially with less flexible ones like wire bead tires. I replaced all of my wheelsets with snap on nylon rim strips and it totally resolved my problems. If they can make these lower profile, they may work, but the real solution is just to use standard rim tape like Velox or snap on rim strips.

      Veloplugs are a neat concept, but they didn't work for me at all. I run quality carbon wheels with TPU tubes and Continental GP5000 tires. With strong hands, and good technique, tubes and tires fit without tire levers. When I tried to use the Veloplugs instead of rim tape, the plugs filled up the center channel of the rim, making it impossible to install the tires, even with 2 levers, soapy water, and all the tricks helping that last bit of tire to get on the wheel... not even close.

      Somehow I keep running out of Veloplugs ...

      Somehow I keep running out of Veloplugs and buying more. They make a good base layer for flexible tubeless tape if the rim is wide enough. The shallow tops do interfere with initial sealing airflow if a narrow rim. On a rim brake bike, they take high pressure with no worries and leave air volume available for a better ride when using low pressure. They also make it easier to mount a tight tire.

      No need for rim tape any more! Lighter too!

      If you've ever gotten a flat on a bicycle while in the middle of no where due to weak or punctured inner tube caused by poor rim tape, then this is for you! I've used these for several years now and all my bikes use these now. Measure your spoke holes properly to get the right size for your wheels.
