Untwist twist drill
I used the 4mm drill on a decking project and for the most part the tool was fine. Towards the end of the session one hole had to go through a hard knot and the drill jammed and due to the power of the hand held cordless drill the bit bent slightly and the section not in the wood began to untwist. As I had more holes to drill I continued to use the tool but with great care and it seemed to straighten out but not retwist, I was able to cut the rest of the required holes. I would be wary of using it again. I have not used the bigger size drills which may be more resilient. The cordless drill used was towards the lower end of the power range for such drills.I used the 4mm drill on a decking project and for the most part the tool was fine. So soft it straightened in use!
I needed a long drill bit to get through the final 20 mm of a 4 mm hole i was boring from both ends of a piece of hardwood (ash) on my lathe. I'd successfully drilled from both ends with one of my 100 mm long series drill bit without any issues, normal really, exactly what I'd expect. I then put one of these 300 mm drill bit into my battery drill to finish the bore but it straightened out. The metal is not hardened along the whole length of the flutes which means it is going to straighten when meeting any friction. In the end the tip was hard enough and I did manage to get the job done but had I not noticed the drill bit may well have sheared inside the piece of wood causing a considerable problem. This may have been a one off that missed the hardening process and I've not needed to use ... A bit fragile but OK for a one off job
First thing to say is that these are described as Auger drill bits, and they are not. They are brad point drill bits. I have only used the size 5 and size 6 drill bits, mostly the size 6 and I bought them knowing they probably wouldn't last too long, but they were inexpensive and I couldn't find 300mm size 5 and 6 bits anywhere else that I could get quickly. I needed them to drill a handful of holes through the long side of some railways sleepers. The size 5 bit bent like a banana half way through but I managed to straighten it and finish drilling. The size 6 did not bend though it didn't exactly feel solid. The point is, they did the job I wanted and the thicker bits will probably be much sturdier.
