    Shores of Tripoli

The book spells out the first significant use of force by the President in protecting our interests overseas. The story is clear and succinct. What is really nice is there is very little editorializing. All to often, an author will be writing a history book that becomes an editorial. That skews the facts to fit the authors narrative. No here. Great book to take on an airplane as it is a little discussed era in our history........................in the Middle East. Well worth the purchase.

  • Well-written historical account--a great read

Relates the history of the beginning of U.S. Naval and Marine forces organized under Thomas Jefferon's presidency to defend our merchant ships against the Barbary states and their pirates. Previously, the U.S. was paying these states--Triploi, Tunis, Algiers, and Morocco--to allow our ships access to ports in the Mediterranean. For 15 years, Jefferson tried to negotiate with them, finding it impossible because their religion justified plundering and enslaving nonmuslims. Unlike John Adams, Jefferson wanted to move beyond diplomacy and submission to extortion. He expanded the Navy and Marines and launched the Barbary wars. The book accurately tells the story and documents America's first step toward super power status. I enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

  • The ancient war on terror

War on terror is nothing new, it has been going on since the beginning of Islam. This book reveals how Muslims are the reason our Navy grew from a small domestic fleet to a world power, why Marines are called leathernecks and origin of their saber and the shores of Tripoli in the Marine Corps hymn.

  • The rarely mentioned war against the United States of America. (Tripoli declared war first.)

President Washington and President Adams built up the navy. Then President Jefferson resolved to use it But it is the heroic deed of the American navy, marines, and local allies that finally put an end to Barbary piracy against Americans and American trade. A must read for history buff on the intricacies of diplomatic skills plus military muscle, etc.

  • Pertinent links that plague us still

So much of today's worldwide unrest can be trace to problems arising in this era. Our own Navy was established by Jefferson due to American crewman, dignitaries, representatives & cargo being hijacked & held captive then... as the practice continues. Jihad was very old roots, shows itself clearly. Jefferson saw this as well as the Rothschild infiltrating our financial structure. A GREAT President! A Great read!
