Synopsis
In 1959 Florence Green, a kindhearted widow with a small inheritance, risks everything to open a bookshop - the only bookshop - in the seaside town of Hardborough. By making a success of a business so impractical, she invites the hostility of the town's less prosperous shopkeepers. By daring to enlarge her neighbors' lives, she crosses Mrs. Gamart, the local arts doyenne. Florence's warehouse leaks, her cellar seeps, and the shop is apparently haunted. Only too late does she begin to suspect the truth: a town that lacks a bookshop isn't always a town that wants one., From the author of The Blue Flower comes a comic study of stiff upper lip in the face of small-town nastiness--a perfect little gem (BBC Kaleidoscope). A marvelously piercing fiction.--Times Literary Supplement.

  • The Bookstore—that’s what the main character was trying to establish

I was excited to read this because I love books about cozy quaint seaside towns, and I liked the premise that the protagonist was attempting to turn an old house into what would be the town’s only bookstore. But the writing and the content was, unfortunately, rather drab and tedious, and I found myself unable to sustain any interest in the characters or the story...to the point where I finally abandoned it altogether, unfinished.

  • Exactly where all readers want to be.

Penelope is a wonderful , detailed, and engaging writer. It's hard to put this book down, when I do I find myself thinking about her book and where the story is going to lead to, this I like.

  • Boring

Written long ago in England. I didn’t care for it.
