Useful monitor for high pH aquariums

On balance I'll give a thumbs up for this monitor but there are some significant reservations. Firstly, a little chemistry, it's important to realise this only responds to free ammonia (NH3) which is in equilibrium with ammonium (NH4+). This equilibrium is very much pH dependent, the higher the pH the more equilibrium favours free ammonia and the more likely you are to see a response. The end result in practice is that this monitor is only going to respond if your aquarium runs at a high pH (eg>7.5). I was curious to test this so I deliberately dosed some water and didn't see any changes until I adjusted it to pH 8. So in conclusion, it does give some reassurance but there again something would have to be terribly wrong for any response to occur in the vast majority of aquariums which ...

    • Tests Free Ammonia which kills your fish

Test strips and kits rarely give separate readings for the two types of ammonia in your take. This simple device tests for free ammonia which is the killer. Be super careful removing the plastic film, put it greatly along the length not away from the device. Test it works by exposing it to ammonia vapour. Found in plant fertiliser like miracle grow. You should see a reaction instantly. Then place in tank. NEVER touch the round sensor in the middle. It takes the sensor a few hours to return to the correct reading in your tank. Place in a position where light shines on it not from behind it as your eyes view the colours incorrectly. Image: Mine is still returning to normal after exposure to ammonia vapour.

    • Very user friendly

Like any other system, being used to keep inhabitants healthy, a backup is essential. My past overnight catastrophies, of twenty years ago, left me in no doubt that a backup device is always running in the background. Therefore I have an eheim 2080, running 24/7, I also have a TMC fluidised filter hanging at the back of the aquarium, running as backup, eheim heater, plenty of bubbling to oxygenate the 450 Ltr tank. One discus in particular hangs in once spot letting the bubbles run up his side, anything else that tries to move in gets pushed away.

I put this in my fresh water aquarium and it went straight to the alert colour. I changed 50% of the water and it went straight to the safe colour! What more could I ask for. It worked perfectly and saved me a lot of bother!
