    The problem with lots of autobiographies is that the subjects are only interesting because of the work they do. The only real interest their biographies have is "How I became famous" . . . Ian Stone sidesteps that problem by diverting the context of his autobiography away from himself. It's a masterstroke as rather than get bogged down wih the tedium of his early life the reader gets a cultural commentary of London in the 70s seen through the eyes of a teeneager discovering the first band / music that means something to him. Like all good stand ups he comes across as just an ordinary bloke but with a point to make and that takes a lot of skill. It's a smart and funny book without ever being smug or seeming to try too hard. Most comics try to be too wacky or too "hilarious" with their ...
