About this product

Product Information

A classic British spy mystery, and one of Hitchcock's best, THE 39 STEPS is the story of an innocent man who struggles to prove his innocence. Robert Donat gets more than he bargained for when he brings home a mysterious woman who confesses to be a British agent on the hot trail of a dangerous spy ring. The woman is killed in Donat's apartment and he immediately finds himself on the run, burdened with the charge for her murder and the dangerous knowledge of her mission. The film is distinguished by its pioneering use of contrapuntal sound effects, as well as the dynamism between Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll.

  • The 39 Steps

This film is so good, so much a part of my life, that it is difficult to know where to start. It has the pace, the wit and the suspense that characterise the best of Hitchcock. It also has Hitchcocks's best lead actor in the truly marvellous Robert Donat. His lightness of touch, flair for comedy and luxurious voice are a real treat. And Madeleine Carroll is no slouch and the interplay between them is the film's real heart. This is (surprisingly, given its age) the sexiest film Hitchcock ever made. Buy it and watch it and then watch it again. The documentary on Hitchcock's early movies is delightful and the dvd makes the film look great. If the house was on fire and I had to rescue one dvd this could very easily be the one.

  • The Thirty Nine Steps DVD (Hitchcock)

Having watched the BBC production of the Thirty Nine Steps over Christmas, and being familiar with at least one other version of this film, I was interested to learn how accurately the films produced reflected the book on which they were supposed to be based. Never having seen the Hitchcock version before, I was keen to view it. In essence the Kenneth Moore version produced some years later was based on the Hitchcock film, so the plot was quite familiar. What I enjoyed though were the performances of the actors and the general pace of the film. It turns out (in my opinion anyway), that the Robert Powell film is probably closer to the original book than the earlier films, but this did not reduce my enjoyment of any of them.
