Hollywood's big screen treatment of the D-Day landings is a long affair, but all the same a brilliant film told from the perspective of all sides - The Allies, the Germans... even the French Resistance. It is sympathetic to all too, careful not too paint any side with any unnecessary malice. The battle scenes are magnificent, but it is the more quiet, private moments between the officers or the men that make the film so moving. Featuring an all star cast of 48 international stars and stunningly shot in Black & White, this film stands up against any War film made before it or since. Simply put one of the greatest War films ever made and a must-own for any movie-lovers collection. This DVD features Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and is presented in 2.35:1 Anamorphic widescreen. Among the extra features on this Double Disc DVD including a Trailer and 2 Documentaries and includes a 12 page commemorative booklet.Read full review

A rather long film, which tries to cram in all the pertinent events of D-Day 1944. It covers top-level decisions, marshalling problems, and the difficulties faced by the invading fighting forces and their enemies. It is handled as fiction based on truth, and many events depicted actually happened as described, but allowance must be made for the perceived need for dramatisation to keep the low-attention-threshold audience entertained. Most of the stars render empathetic performances, but Hollywood oft times dominates particular inter-personal scenes. Largely, it seems to work well at all levels, and it is recognised as a genuine classic film reflecting an important day in the history of the world.
I bought this for my grandson as I think the battle sequencies are very well enacted. Certainly they had my grandson spellbound. If I had a small criticism it was that the meteorological situation for D-Day was treated rather briefly. After all, it was the best weather forecast in world history, and I have written a paper about the man who prepared it - not Group-Captain Stagg but C.K.M. Douglas, Chief Forecaster at Dunstable. The colour version does give more prominence to this aspect of D-Day, but such details are probably for the connoisseur. Dr Michael Field
This is a classic WW11 film which even though in black and white does not shadow to modern films. I have noted there are many reflections in modern films like Private Ryan to the story lines in Longest Day. All in all an excellent film.
my dad has wanted this film for ages he has really enjoyed whatching it and can enjoy it when ever he wants to now thank you
