Powerful and edgy music from the late seventies.
Anyone familair with Jackie Leven's career will know that he is an exceptional songwriter and singer - but thirty years ago (like all of us) he was much angrier and much louder. This is a great record of his earlier incarnation in doll by doll, a fantastic band who never had any appreciable success despite being exciting, sensitive and literate. In the late 70's they couldn't get arrested, being outside all prevailing fashions, which was, I suspect, just where they were happiest. Closest comparison would be the Waterboys, but more guitar orientated and less obviously folk. They made four albums, all good - I'd particularly recommend the eponymous third album if you ever see it on vinyl - none of which ever came out on CD, so this is a great picture of an unfairly forgotten band. This is most of their first album, with only "Lose Myself" by Jo Shaw (gtr) missing, all the other six songs being written by Jackie, and at this point they were loud and rather fond of dissonance, no doubt the better to complement these tales of sadness, violence and rage. However, the melodic prowess and subtle arrangememts that came to the fore in the next albums are still there albeit hidden behind the dynamics. For my money this incarnation of the band is still exciting and I still hum all of these tunes to this day. Much exercised by the likes of Behan, Ahkmatova and cummings (hence the name) doll by doll's greatest appeal for me was in the lyrics, and "More than human" is a good example with its dying engines and burning poetry books; you just can't get this stuff anymore. It's also wonderful that it features their loveliest first moment in "Janice", with intertwined guitars and harmonies tenderly lamenting a lover's surrender to conformity. Much recommended and well done to Cooking Vinyl for more good work at the esoteric edge of music.

OK if you like Remember and are a die hard fan
This is for die hard Doll by Doll and Jackie Leven fans only. Live recording quality is OK with a few OK tracks like Butcher Boy but I was a bit disappointed. However, IMHO, Gypsy Blood was a masterpiece throughout with about half of the tracks on the Doll by Doll follow up getting close, particularly Bright Green Field. I can't say I really love Remember, so that probably influenced my feelings on Revenge of Memory. What was interesting recently on Danny Baker's Rocking Decades programme, was that Mark Ellen, Music journalist and editor, put forward Grand Passion as his standout album for the time capsule! Hmmm, would love to know what he thinks of Gypsy Blood and Doll by Doll.This is for die hard Doll by Doll and Jackie Leven fans only.
