Some truly scary scenes that are within the bounds of realism, especially th one that takes place in the swimming pool. This is horror well done in that it doesn't veer into incredulity. The viewer could easily imagine himself caught in the circumstances that plague this family. Karen Black was excellent.

Not much action and a very slow moving plot but decent enough to keep you interested once.

This is an extraordinary film. I went to see it back in 1976 and it pretty much followed Robert Marasco's novel...except for the end. In the novel, there really was no actual ending so when it was filmed, an ending was concocted by Dan Curtis and his associates. Unfortunately I had taken my cousin's two young boys to see the film with me and the ending was such a shocker that the boys were upset and one of them had nightmares. I just didn't really expect the way the film ended. If it hadn't been for Karen Black agreeing to do the film, it would have never been made. She was approached about it after filming "Family Plot" but nothing happened and the film was shelved. It wasn't until 1975 that the film was actually made. Ms. Black is an accomplished and respected actress of the stage and screeen as well as a director. She is superb in the film as are the other actors. Oliver Reed, Bette Davis, Burgess Meredith, Eileen Heckart...It doesn't get any better than that! The young boy who played the son...don't remember his name...he also gave a magnificant performance. When members of the cast were interviewed after the film was completed, I remember reading that when Oliver Reed was asked how he felt about working with Bette Davis, he answered that it was an honor to work with such a great actress. When Ms. Davis was asked about how she felt about working with Karen Black and Oliver Reed, she replied that Ms. Black was an "untalented little nothing" and Mr. Reed was drunk the whole time. Well if he was, it sure didn't show on screen. When he appeared on Johnny Carson in 1975 right after making the film, and he was asked about how it was working with Bette Davis, he replied that every night he rode her food cart down the hotel hallway and it pissed her off. Let's hear it for Ollie! An all-around great film!!!Read full review
I was scared by this movie as a kid in the 70's and decided to rewatch it as an adult. To my surprise, it wasnt available at any of the local rental stores, so I decided to buy it. The dvd has very little in the way of extras, but what it has are 1) commentary by Dan Curtis and Karen Black 2) Original trailer for the film. If you want behind the scenes, deleted scenes or alternate endings and the like, sorry, If you are a Burnt Offerings fan, you can also read the original story by picking up the novel here on ebay-it ends differently from the movie. If you are a fan of Dan Curtis stuff, you should like this--very atmospheric, scary old house, at least one good storm, some blood at the end, typical Dan Curtis gothic (Dark Shadows) music.
A horror film from 1976 that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This stars classic actors like Burgess Meredith, Karen Black, Oliver Reed, and Bettie Davis. If your looking for a creepy thriller this is it, I highly recommend it. The DVD was used, but in great condition. I want to thank you so much for the great DVD.

I'm sure this film would bore most people. I dunno. I'm 38 and I always loved Oliver Reed. Just him standing in front of a camera with that pissed off look of his was always unsettling (should I remind you that he and Crispin Glover were the only two guests to physically threaten David Letterman on his show back in the 80's?) and was a horror show in itself. In this movie, he's some American kid's British Dad. And is still unsettling. Maybe it's just me. I also dig movies that revolve around a creepy old house/mansion/building. If you feel the same way, then you might check this movie out. It's about an old creepy building that....hmmmm...has a real neat way of repairing itself.. ...with human souls.... Let's see Bob Villa, or the guys down at Home Hardware, top that one.
I got this for a friend but watched it before I gave it to him. I hadn't seen it since it first came out and it was really creepy how the house began to work its evil on the family and they ended up losing in the long run. Mrs. Allerdyce just looked like pure evil. Karen Black is always fun to watch. Burgess Meredit is also one of my favorite actors (Of Mice And Men). :-) I used to live close to that house (Dunsmuir), which is in Oakland, CA.

I have always enjoyed seeing Betty Davis perform. I believe the father in this story also played the role of Bill Sykes in "Oliver Twist", so it was interesting to see him in another light. Anthony James manages to terrify Betty Davis by doing nothing but driving up in a hearse and smiling at her-oh, and there is that incident with the casket. It's a different kind of horror movie- short on blood and beheadings, but concentrating on what is unseen and unheard, but still present. I always enjoy seeing the house win.

Classic haunted house horror from Dan Curtis. Great performances from Oliver Reed, Karen Black and Bette Davis. And great supporting performances from Burgess Meredith and Eileen Heckart. The creepy chauffeur from the dream sequences really adds to the overall environment of horror that slowly builds as the movie progresses. If you like haunted house flicks, I put this one up there with The Legend of Hell House (1973), The Haunting (1963), and The Changeling (1980).
