Recently moved and my other copy got ruined somehow. Haven't actually watched it for years but I wanted it replaced. I just remember it was a crazy movie!

Very confusing screenplay, historically inaccurate in some spots. With Helen Mirren, Peter O'Toole and others, the acting is good, but could be better. The editing is choppy, as well, and like most of the screenplay, is does not get across them point Caligula's madness.. It could do with a serious rewrite and a better director and screenwriter. Lot of emphasis on orgy scenes, but, they are not very erotic, nor exciting. Helen Mirren was the sexiest of the women actors, but, the director could not resist the urge to be artsy , rather than straightforward, with her nude scenes, so, they are a disappointment, too. Larry Flint is not a director and ruined what could have been a very interesting movie.

Malcolm McDowell's Caligula is an extremely graphic version of the short-lived and cruel reign of, Roman Emperor, Gaius "Caligula." It begins by establishing Caligula's disturbing relationship with his sister (Julia) Drusilla. From his succession as Emperor (following the untimely death of his 77 year-old uncle, Tiberious) to his eventual and anticipated death, the majority of the film focused on Caligula's latter and notoriously-decadent, cruel, and bizarre behavior. Though the 156-minute feature is disturbingly-accurate, much of the film is pornography. Caligula is very well-made with realistic and elaborate scenery to mirror any modern major motion picture that, with hard-core sex and, often-times, unnecessarily-gratuitous and deviant behavior, will show some of the most violent, sexual, and diturbing acts in cinema history. Though it accurately displays Gaius' succession, late-tenure as Emperor, flu and death of his sister, Drusilla, and (brief) preceding by (Uncle) Claudius, much of the details were modified for entertainment-value and would be difficult to see exclusively for its historic appeal. Reluctantly, it has entertainment-value as one of the most memorable and violent films ever made.Read full review
This is a sickening, utterly worthless, shameful trash, without a solid plot line, just barely based on historical events, without a doubt the worst film I have ever seen, and it is a shame to see the people with talent who participated in this parody that contains the worse acting in any movie ever made. It is not good cinema due to the amateurish filming and staging and to be quite honest is not even good porn. That said, if anyone feels they must see this garbage I would advice you to borrow a copy and do not waste your money buying one.

Would have been better if it wasn't a pornographic film. Excuse me, "soft-core" pornographic film. The best scenes were in between the graphic sex and nudity scenes. You see so much flapping around that when it went into a new scene with people clothed and speaking, there were audible sighs of relief. I knew something was up when I saw "Penthouse Productions" in the opening credits. The story is great, you just have to look past the people being abused, bestiality and incest...all in graphic depictions. Poor snake!
