2000 - From the mastermind behind Airplane and The Naked Gun series comes BASEketball, an off-the-wall comedy from David Zucker. Not only is Zucker's oddball sense of humor in full effect in this movie, but it also stars the creators of South Park, so you can image just how wacky this one can get. The Movie Twenty-something losers Joe Cooper (Trey Parker) and Doug Remer (Matt Stone) create their own hybrid of baseball and basketball with the added "psyche-out" defense in their driveway, and it quickly becomes a neighborhood favorite. It soon becomes so popular that the neighborhood forms a league and baseketball sees its first full season, complete with a world championship game. Fed up with the gross commercialism of professional sports, Ted Denslow (Ernest Borgnine) approaches Coop and Remer about forming a professional baseketball league where players would all be paid the same, multi-million dollar trade deals would be eliminated, and anyone with the desire to play could take the field. Coop and Remer agree and the National Baseketball League is born. During the NBL championship game, Denslow chokes on a hotdog and dies, leaving control of the National Baseketball League in the hands of Joe. Rival owner Baxter Cain (Robert Vaughn) tries to tempt Coop and Remer with higher salaries and the promise of global fame. Though Remer is persuaded at first, he finally comes around to help Coop retain baseketball's integrity. This is a typical Zucker film, so expect plenty of zany, sophomoric comedy bits with a lot of slapstick and often sick jokes. Overall BASEketball is incredibly funny and entertaining if you like Zucker's style, but the humor isn't for everyone. 7 out of 10 The Video The 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer is superb with no artifacting or shimmering. The images are sharp and the colors are bright, with excellent separation and no apparent bleeding. Blacks are dark and deep while whites remain bright and clean. 8 out of 10Read full review
I love this movie. It has been one of my favorites even since it came out in 1998. It is from the creators of South Park, which I also love, and has some of the same kind of humor. I had this on VHS and was looking for a DVD and retail stores are to expensive. This was a great buy, but for a movie of this quality, I would have paid even more. If you havent seen it, you must NOW! If you have seen it, buy it and show it to everyone who hasnt seen it. SPREAD THE BASKETBALL. It is also a fun game to play with your friends, and yes i have tried it.
Freakin hilarious movie about 2 shmoe low lifes who conjur a game at a party with rules that both define baseball, and deliver basketballs shot group. Matt Stone and Trey Parker are the guys that were most likely infamous in highschool, and show up at a party where everyone is wearing the "90's IN look"..They were clearly out-dated in clothing, realising this they shot some hoops...When challenged to play basketball by jockeys, the boys decide to come up with this never before heard of, "BASEKETBALL"...The sport grows, and once noticed as superstars, the friends split...THE REST IS FOR YOU TO SEE!!!! 5 OF 5 STARS! you just cant go without this one if you are a south park fan, the laughs are great and they keep coming from beginning to end, alot of this has to do with understanding that the movie has to be watched knowing that it is just slapstick comedy and stupid jokes that you can find the humor in just like lots of other films ya just need to be in a silly sort of mood when you watch it just like when you watch south park, sure the stuff can be tasteless at times but it really doesnt hurt anyone if ya laugh at stupid things just for them being stupid or silly
Smart, crude, and outrageously funny. Trey Parker and Matt Stone sure know how to go big. As a South Park fan, I’m now fully convinced as where they come up with their material, which subjects to tackle, and so on. Awesome movie. 10/10
