Tim Robbins stars in his directorial debut as right-wing folksinger Bob Roberts in this satirical mock documentary. Roberts is joined on the Pennsylvania senatorial campaign trail by a British documentary filmmaker who offers insight into Roberts, his staff, and his supporters. Roberts is the anti-Bob Dylan, wowing his supporters with tunes such as "Times Are Changin' Back" and "Wall Street Rap" (which includes a video send-up of Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues"). With his clean-cut good looks and squeaky-clean image, Roberts appears as American as apple pie. Yet, like most politicians, he harbors some nasty secrets, including potential involvement in illegal drug trafficking and bank scandals. And like most politicians, he is a master at manipulating the media. Roberts's political trickery turns serious when an innocent man is accused of attempting to assassinate the candidate. Some of Hollywood's best appear as news anchors and reporters, including Susan Sarandon, James Spader, Peter Gallagher, and Helen Hunt. Gore Vidal is immensely believable as the liberal incumbent trying to keep his Senate seat, battling Robbins, who is the consummate politician of the 1990s: lots of fluff and not much substance.

    A CONSERVATIVE folk singing-political candidate?

    HILARIOUS is one of the many words I can think of that describe this gem of a movie. It is mockumentary in nature, and it follows the trail of our hero, Bob Roberts, as he moves through his senatorial campaign. Bob is a talented folk singer with a hard right edge. You would expect to hear liberal lyrics with the folksy music he produces, but instead he touts no-nonsense harsh conservative views. The satire is intense, and hilarious. Honestly, I'm not sure whether the movie would appeal to conservatives or not. I see the humor in it because I tend to side with Tim Robbins' real-life political views. However, good humor crosses political parties. Perhaps those whose views slant more to the right might find the references to tree-hugging liberals funny. Since I don't know for sure, ...

    Great movie on DVD, but would be netter in its original filmed format

    I am disappointed that a, "Special Edition" of a movie on DVD does not present this 1992 movie is only presented in a Pan & Scan format. I would prefer the option to watch this movie in its original aspect ration

    Time to watch Bob Roberts Again.

    Imagine Donald Trump with a brain, and the ability to write and sing catchy folk-songs. A brilliant analysis of our times, but produced in 1992.

    Brilliant political satire

    One of the finest political movies ever made. If you didn't know Tim Robbins, you might believe this was the documentary it pretends to be. Released in 1992, it could have been made now. It satires the whole political process, but especially the depths many will go to to win an election. A must for any Robbins fan or political wonk.
