About this product

Product Information

Acclaimed British filmmaker Shane Meadows (THIS IS ENGLAND) steps outside his familiar Midlands for his first film set in London. Thomas Turgoose stars as Tomo, who, having runaway from his native Nottingham, finds himself on the streets of London's King's Cross. It isn't long before he becomes friends with Marek, a young Polish immigrant who lives nearby. While this unlikely pair seems to have little in common at first, it isn't long before they realise the trials and tribulations of youth transcend cultural boundaries and both begin to harbour desires for a beautiful young waitress who works in their local cafe.

Additional Information

Reviews
Variety - Basically a comedy but with typically Meadowsian dark edges, it forms an affectionate tribute to cross-cultural friendship and the rapidly changing landscape known as Somers Town, a rundown warren of social housing and decaying industrial wasteland thatÆs beautifully exalted by pencil-gray monochrome lensing

  • Slight but charming

Fans of Shane Meadows and Paul Fraser's partnership will enjoy this slight but charming story. The film is about two lonely lads who are thrown together on the brink of adulthood and how they begin to explore romance with the aid of a local waitress. Meadows improvisational technique helps show the universal in a story about boys whose positition may seem alien to many. The film although highly enjoyable lacks the high drama of some of Meadows other work and so, for me, was not as engaging. For people new to Meadows and Fraser's work it would be better to start with a different film such as "A room for Romeo Brass", however this film is enjoyable and well worth owning.

  • Somers Town

A true Shane Meadows budding classic. Thomas Turgoose is brilliant. The monocrome photography really works. I initially thought "this is a bit of a short film", but it isn't. A must see that I strongly recommend. If you liked Shaun in 'This is England' you'll simply love Thommo in Somers Town. Buy it, rent it, see it. Need I say more.

  • Somers Town

I'm a great fan of UK cinema. I've been a fan of Shane Meadows ever since I saw This Is England, followed by Dead Man's Shoes. Somers Town is very different. Very enjoyable and funny at times, if you like this sort of realistic gritty drama. It's a world apart from This Is England and Dead Man's Shoes, so don't expect more of the same.

  • brilliant

Top UK film once again from Shane Meadows. Also recommend Romeo Bass and Dead Mans Shoes by the same director.
