This is the Bible for Engineers, Machinists and Designers. I bought it as a desk reference at the medical company. I own a first edition from 1914 and it is interesting to see the changes. If I buy another copy, I will consider the large print edition because it is easier to use deskside. This will be a better shop copy because of the small size and packed content. For my needs, I did not need the newest edition. A must for any mechanical design lover.
When you need it, you need it. The book is outdated in how we think of modern tools, but a lot of the information in this text really hasn't changed in the past 30 years or so. I use this book for design engineering, and my colleagues use anything between the 21st and 26th editions. Grab what you can under $50 and don't worry about getting a modern copy unless you work heavily with polymers. There isn't anything wrong with the information included, but it is my understanding that this area is much larger in newer copies. I personally found the 25th edition to be the perfect balance of a good price and modern style graphs and diagrams.

Ever since getting a lathe I've gotten by without one but as my skills and ambitions have increased I've finally justified buying one. Didn't need the newest edition as I don't do CNC. Wish I had bought one years ago.
