Harrowing but sad story of a man (Michael Douglas) who was an employee of a defense contractor, but gas been downsized by the end of the Cold War and the economy. He lives with his mother who, after a month, still doesn't know he has lost his job. He continues to leave for work every morning but has no job. He is separated from his wife, and because he is emotionally unstable, she has had to have a restraining order issued to keep him away. It is his daughter's birthday, and he is stuck in traffic. It is very hot, and he just sort of loses it. he just walks away from his car on the freeway, and into a foreigner owned convenience store, to buy a can of coke. Outraged by the price he gets into a conflict with the owner who pulls out a bat. He takes the bat away from him and leaves the money for the drink. Upon leaving the store, he is hassled by a group of Mexican gang members who demand his brief case. He hits them with the bat and they scatter. He begins walking in the general direction of his former home. The Mexicans in an old Chevy come after him and begin shooting. Their car crashed and several are hurt. He sees a gym bag full of guns and takes it. At a fast food joint he orders some breakfast items that are sitting in plain view, but is told that breakfast time is over, by only one or two minutes. He is really having a bad day now, and pulls out a machine gun and sprays the ceiling. Of course by now the police are looking for him. The C.Store owner accused him of breaking up his store, the dead Mexicans from the car crash, now the shooting in the fast food place. Robert Duval is on his last day as a LA detective and was looking forward to an easy day. He and his partner, a female cop, are trying to find out just what is going on. Douglas's wife has called to say that she is worried because he called an said he was coming over for his child's birthday. She tells them about his mental state. Eventually they put two and two together and realize that this guy has just lost his mind and try to find him before anybody gets hurt. But, try as they may, this guy is wanting to die, and uses the police to commit suicide. This was a sad but all too common scene in today's society.Read full review
One of Michael Douglas's most compelling, gut-wrenching, disturbing, and heart breaking films EVER! Not to mention thought provoking: put yourself in his shoes. Any one of us would have done EXACTLY THE SAME....take a look around; it speaks truer even moreso now, and it's 30 years later...hmm
