Een perfect player for those who likes perfect quality. Plenty of options. Easy to handle. Connection for BD Life. A top model
As one of Sonys third gen Blu Ray players, the BDP S550 was always expected to up the ante in terms of user interface, and decoding options. And up the ante it did! Not to be confused with its sibling, the BDP S330, they look suprisingly alike, the 550 also has 7.1 analogue outputs for linking to an amp/reciever that doesn't have an HDMI audio input, thereby allowing access to the newer HD audio formats on Blu Ray discs. Not physically imposing like the big Pioneer machines or even the Denon Hi-end monsters, this Sony will, however, look discretely assured on your equipment rack. The picture performance is more than good, and also features component outputs so accessing HD video, upto and including 1080i, is available as an alternative to the HDMI out. Or if your display just doesn't feature HDMI! The sound is strong and deep, although a careful eye must paid to the bass output trimming option in the setup menu, especially if you are accessing the audio via the 7.1 outputs. that is not a problem, just something you may find handy if you notice the low end sounding either muddled or too weak. BD live is another feature of this machine, as well as a 1GB storage stick for backing up your settings etc. Lan connectivity is another feature that sets this unit apart from cheaper units from other manufacturers, and the set up for said connection is so simple my 9 year old managed it. Over all, this is a machine that on its release laid waste to its opponents! And very nearly matched its own higher rated sibling, the BDP S5000se! Ease of operation and the supplied remote make for an easy unit to use in the home, or dedicated viewing room. And don't think it won't equip itself in a larger system. It plays cds well, but is not the best. But it's with movies it really lets rip. Effect placement is faultless, for the money, bass, once trimmed, is fine too. Dialogue is crisp and clear as is surround information. The only downside, if there has to be one, is the lack of 3D support, but if you are buying one of these the chances are you may already have a player for 3D use. If not, then you can do a hell of a lot worse than to buy the 550 for frontline duties.Read full review
Having decided to upgrade to a Blu-Ray player, I spent a few weeks researching the market to see exactly what was out there. I assumed that all Blu-Ray players would give similar picture & sound results and, not needing all the bells & whistles, I was originally attracted to the budget ranges but how wrong I was!! Compared to the sub £200 Samsung and Tesco's own models, the Sony BDP-S550 is in a different league giving a far superior picture and great sound. I also rate it better than other models I tested that were more expensive. I have a 50" LG plasma TV and the picture is superb. In fairness, the Sony BDP-S350 is almost as good and I was tempted to go for that model until I saw a fantastic bargain on E-Bay, complete with a selection of Blu-Ray discs to start my collection, which I just couldn't resist! All in all, I would most certainly recommend this machine to anyone - even if you are on a tight budget like I was, it is worth scraping up a few extra pennies!!Read full review
Bought this because our previous dvd player packed up and needed a unit that could be plugged into our existing surround sound system. Fits the bill perfectly and was a very good price. Very pleased with my purchase....:)
the picture and sound on this player is perfect in every way,it is a pleasure to pay twice as much for blue ray disc than dvds.
