I had been wanting to read this book for a long time. I actually thought it had been written closer to the time of Kennedy's death, but it had been researched and written in 1995. I found it to be well researched and well written. I especially liked the way the author organized it, it was chronological, but topic by topic. I think that made it easier to follow. After reading it, I think the reader comes away with a more flesh and blood picture of both Jack and Bobby Kennedy. But I think you have to read it with a grain of salt because it's clear that the author had a deep and long abiding hatred of the Kennedys. His feelings may have been well founded, but I think they definitely affect his objectivity. I am not disputing many of the factual scenarios, they are well researched and clearly presented. However it must be noted that many are based on the interviews that the author conducted in 1995 and the interviewees themselves talk about how their memories have faded and sometimes contradict themselves. My quarrel is more with the sweeping conclusions that the author makes, blaming so many of Kennedy's actions and decisions on his womanizing and drug dependency. I can't help but think that this is over-simplifying things. While the author may be right that the Kennedys felt above the law, I do think more went into the process of running the government than just Kennedy's whims. Even in the book, Hersh describes the way the President got input from the Cabinet, his staff and journalists he liked and admired. It was a fascinating read, but as with almost everything, the reader must consider the source and take it with a grain of salt.Read full review
This is the forth copy of this book that I have owned. I really enjoyed it so much that I have handed off copies to friends and family. Dark Side exposes the inner workings of government and politics. It shows how the public personna of popular politicians and celebrities is created to sell their product and programs. Throughout the book, interviews and references are presented to shine the light on the myth. This book provides a strong historical perspective of what really did happen and how history can possibly repeat itself. This should be must reading for all Political Science Majors. It also demonstrates how history is rewritten and recreated to honor and embellish the performance of an assinated president. It makes me wonder about the true performance of other presidents from Washington to Lincoln.Read full review
So well documented it was impossible for this old southern democrat to not accept as the way it was. The Kennedy Washington,Hollywood, Castro and Mafia connections are intricately woven. Fascinating. Detailed. I bought a copy for my library, one to share with friends and one to highlight for research. I'm not sure how I missed reading this years ago. The historical subject matter pushed my thoughts forward to the present political season. I hope to live long enough to learn the truths about recent administrations and that which lurked in their back alleys.
Highly recommended.

I was very disappointed in this order. The book was not as described- "like new" --pages were yellowed and the book smelled of smoke. I bought it to give to a friend. Obviously I could not give it as a gift. The book is a good read and holds the reader's attention. Some good information for history/political science buffs. Other books I have ordered that were described as "like new" truly were like new. I was pleased until this order.
