Product Information

As you lay dying, you beg the powers that be to somehow spare your life. Your wish is granted, but by Satan himself, who forces you to become the new master of his castle...the Castle of the Damned. To fulfill your contract, you must ensure that Satan is resurrected so you can use his dark powers. The castle is not unknown to the world, however. Treasure seekers, nobles, bounty hunters, and knights will enter your castle and try to defeat you. You must not let this happen.<br><br>Satan requires the souls of the castle invaders, and you will have various traps at your disposal to capture them. Traps are divided into three types: capture, destroy, and confuse. Cages, spikes, lifts, poisonous gas, and more are at your disposal, and each trap can be upgraded. Once ensnared, the victims' souls can be used for money or magic points. Their empty bodies can even be harvested to create monsters. The action is divided into 26 chapters, each offering a certain number of heroes to vanquish. <br><br>Gameplay is structured into five distinct phases. The invasion phase has adventurers entering your castle. The strategy phase involves positioning your traps on an overhead map, or building new rooms. The 3D action phase, the heart of the game, consists of luring victims to your traps from a first-person viewpoint. The decision phase has you choosing the fate of your enemy, while the intermission phase lets you save progress, collect more souls, or advance to the next chapter. Six endings are possible based on your decisions and actions throughout the game.

Great original Deception game!
Tecmo's Deception is different compared to the later Deception games that I'm used to but in a good way. It's first person which is different and earn experience which is nice. Overall a great game.

A very rare game...
This is pretty much a rare game for the Playstation, in most cases you will see this game going for at least $20 or more and when you think about it, that's the price of a Playstation 2 Greatest Hits game. This game flew under the radar of most gamers, since it came out in the heyday of the Playstation, the ESRB rated this game Teen and in all honest, it probably should have been rated M for Mature. After all, the game involves capturing and in some cases killing people that are breaking into the Castle of the Damned. It also has Satanic references, which in later sequels it would shy away from the satanic references. I bought this game simply because it's quite unique, you basically see the action from a First Person View and being that this is a role playing game, you can clearly see ... I was given Tecmo’s Deception from a friend of my brother’s whose holy roller parents didn’t want him to play a game with Satanic references. That there alone intrigued me. I really didn’t know what to expect when I actually started playing. Once I got by bearings and the flow of the game down, I found an outlet to unleash that socially unacceptable sadist in me. Due to games of this generation making the transition to 3D, the graphics can come off as crude by today’s standards. Back when I played the game close to its release date, I found the graphics to be about standard for the PS1. They aren’t going to blow your mind, especially since we have been spoiled with our current technology. But even back in the 90’s I found the graphics to be acceptable, but not great. I have a vague recollection of the soundtrack, but what I do remember is that it provided the right ambiance. It is dark and gloomy, but Deception isn’t exactly a happy sunshine game. Despite being graphically adequate and having a virtually forgettable soundtrack, the premise and game play are what propel Deception above many other games. At the time Deception was released, there weren’t really any games like it. You are the master of the mansion and hapless adventurers that are unfortunate to enter your domain become your prey to achieve your directive. You don’t outright attack, but are more like bait as you lure victims into traps that you place. Once you weakened your victims enough you have the option of killing them or consuming their soul. Killing them will yield you gold that will enable you to upgrade and buy new traps, where consuming their soul gives you power. I can’t exactly remember what you do with the power. I think you use it to power traps and spells, but don’t quote me on that, I am working off a 14 year old memory. Deception has a bit of a learning curve, since it is a different type of game. Getting into the strategy of setting the traps takes a bit of time and effort. But once you got it down, you will be setting off some cruel, but awesome chain reactions that will make short work of your prey. You also can expand your mansion layout so you are able to make custom rooms to optimize your traps potential. Once you got all the mechanics down, Deception’s game play can get addicting. If you get joy and amusement as your hapless victims are pummeled and beaten by your traps, then you are one sick individual, but I really don’t have any room to judge. During the PS1’s heyday, games where you were considered the bad guy were rare. Games were starting to grow up and themes began to evolve to where you weren’t always the virtuous hero. This would pave the way for games like Grand Theft Auto. Deception was one of the first to make you the one the heroes would seek out and smite the land of your evils. It was a nice change from the usual save something from evil what’s his name. If it weren’t for the holier than thou parents of my brother’s friend, I probably would have missed Deception. It makes me wonder how many other games I may have missed. Now I am sad.
