The chain is a 16" chain, fits children well but I still wear it as an adult. I purchased this set to replace the locket I've had for 13 years because the top of the pendant had worn through. I got the set for Christmas when I was 11 - wore the necklace first just for special occasions and then more often as the years went by til I was wearing it prettymuch every day and just last month noticed it was hanging by a literal thread of the metal. I was glad to find an exact replacement so easily. So many people have asked over the years if this was my grandmother's locket or some kind of heirloom. Nope, just a special gift from childhood that grew up with me. Totally sappy side note: I loved the look of the locket but never put pictures in it because I hadn't settled on what picture to use. I decided when I was 17 that when someone really, very special was in my life for awhile, then I would put his photo inside. So I waited, different guys became close and then not, til there was one, who I knew not long after we started dating was the guy I was gonna marry. One time after he informed me that I was really important to him, I shared how special he was to me, and how I'd been saving a place in my locket for a special guy and no one fit the bill before him. We didn't get engaged for another 8 months but when I finally found a website to shrink my photos to the right size, I got a photo of us and one of him. And now when people ask what's in my locket, there's something to show them.Read full review

This historical movie differs from modern American Girl movies in that: obviously, the period costumes/sets/plots; no singing; less overt feminism; the main character is orphaned. "Samantha" should entertain girls with its interesting sets, scenes of happiness, coping with sadness, and the friendship between Samantha and Nellie. Not all of the plot has to make sense because this is a kids movie, and happy endings are important in today's world. The acting won't wow you but part of that is the period dialogue. I personally like Grandmary's mansion and the dirty cobblestone street scenes just for how beautiful and realistic they feel. This movie promotes loyalty, hope, sacrificing for family, doing the right thing when it's hard, and many more virtues. "Samantha" will bring smiles--and maybe, wishes for vintage-style dresses!Read full review

If you love history or wish to know what it was like to live in America in the early 1900's,then you will love this movie! This is a quality made film, from the sets to the costumes and the fine job of acting, which will leave you feeling as if you yourself had traveled back in time. Young girls will immediatly adore Samantha and the story even will appeal to adults making this a great movie for mother's to watch with their daughters who are approximately ages 6 and up. The character Samantha is a wonderful roll model for young girls as she is sweet and kind and because she follows her heart to try to make the world around her a better place even even while dealing with her own personal disappointments. I saw just part of this movie on t.v. and had to buy my own copy so I could see the complete movie. A perfect family film to watch around the holidays or just anytime! This film will leave you smiling with it's happy ending!Read full review
Samantha Parkington, an orphan living with her grandmother, is lonely since her best friend, her Uncle Gard, is away in Europe. To her delight, some new servants come to work at a neighbor's house. When Samantha discovers that the family includes three girls and one of them is her age, she is delighted. Samantha quickly becomes best friends with Nellie, the oldest. After a while, Uncle Gard returns from his trip. Samantha is delighted of course until she finds out that the woman he brought back with him, Cornelia, is his fiancee. Samantha is mad at Uncle Gard because she thinks that he will forget about her. But fortunately Cornelia loves kids and becomes fast friends with Samantha. After their wedding, Samantha takes an extended trip to visit them in New York City. While in New York, Samantha finds out that Nellie, her best friend, and her sisters have been orphaned and sent to an orphanage in the city. Samantha goes to visit them and discovers the squalid conditions they live in. Then things become even worse: Nellie is going to be separated from her two sisters and sent out West to a farm. Determined not to let that happen, Samantha hatches a daring plan to rescue Nellie and her sisters. "Samantha: An American Girl Holiday" was truly a delightful film for the entire family. The acting and casting was top notch especially for a TV movie. AnnaSophia Robb (also in "Because of Winn-Dixie") really shines in her movie debut. She captures the Samantha of the books perfectly and is great! Jordan Bridges is also perfect as the playful and fun-filled Uncle Gard. While this movie doesn't follow the books perfectly, it totally captures the spirit and is a great movie all around! If you love the American Girl books, you can't miss this movie! This was a very enjoyable film, directed, produced and performed well by the primary actors and supporting cast. I loved the attention to detail of the period in the architecture of the house and surrounding structures, the costumes were lovely and chosen well. Even though some of the book content was changed to adapt to the film's length, the essence and character of the story was maintained and the valuable lessons for Samantha, Nellie, and the other characters were realized. I wanted to buy the dvd for mine and my granddaughter's enjoyment. We love the charm of the story's setting and the wonderful relationship that develops between Samantha and Nellie - a personal reflection of the progressive development occurring around them in the new century's cultural environment. The story is a wonderful amd eengaging historical lesson, rich with positive values for the young reader and viewer alike. Good values I believe that will be remembered and have their influence on the developing lives of the children who read the books and view this very entertain film.Read full review

They try to instill values so that your child can make the right decision's in there lives. We absolutely love this DVD. It really is great and has really been wonderful for my daughter in a day when there are so few good role models. I am pleased with how an American Girl influences my daughter to enjoy being young and to be a little lady. I bought it, because I thought it would encourage femininity and give her good role models. Thanks an American Girl!
