Neil Young's first truly great solo album
In an era of music dominated by singer-songwriters, Neil Young was a cut above the rest. After sowing the seeds of his solo career on his self-titled debut and it's follow-up "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere", Young released "After the Gold Rush" to massive critical acclaim, which unlike many other contemporary albums of the time, was rightly justified. "After The Gold Rush" covers a lot of musical ground, with self-searching ballads like the title track, "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and "Tell Me Why" and heavy-rockers "When You Dance You Can Really Love" and "Southern Man", the latter a very cleverly written protest song. Without "After the Gold Rush", Young would not have been able to enjoy the subsequent solo career that he did and certainly would not have earned the artistic ... A Classic
Arguably the man's finest work, Neil Young has never been one for unnecessarily padding out a song, and this album demonstrates that. A great collection of rock, folk, and ballad in Young's own unique style, the only blip for me being cripple creek ferry. The man has a real gift for plucking great tunes out of the air, a gift displayed superbly here.
