If youre a fan of those old Italian sword & sandal epics ie: Hercules, The Sons Of Hercules etc, you cant go wrong with a Steve Reeves movie. This dvd was made from a pretty good quality wide screen print unlike many of these films that were just transferred from a poor vhs print. Unfortunately Steve was never allowed to use his own voice in these films & his dubbed voice is different in each film. Theres plenty of the usual strong man action & the destruction of Pompeii is well done. A very young Christine Kaufman makes one of her earliest roles in this film. She would later be married to Tony Curtis for a time. All in all an entertaining film as long as you dont pay too much attention to historical accuracy (just as with most of these Italian epics). Every time my local theater ran one of these films back when I was a kid in the early 60s I made sure I went to see them.

  • Typical"sword and sandals" Italian "epic" using the Vesuvius eruption as an excuse for Reeves

Typical "sword and sandals" epic out of Italy, with Steve Reeves the proverbial hero of a famous city that didn't actually cough one up because of the Vesuvius thing! Special effects pretty cheesy, with stone buildings that clearly WEREN'T stone toppling everywhere like plywood. Reeves goes through his paces rescuing children for their mothers and lifting debris off buried people. As a Gladiator in the piece, Reeves was noticeably the ONLY highly muscled ones, the others were built like parakeets to, I assume, make Reeves stand out more. It's entertaining in parts but definitely not one for the historians to revel in. OK for what it was, but nothing brainy here.

  • The good old days of sword and sandals.

This film has quite a bit of spectacle given the budget. Steve Reeves was the best of the bodybuilder actors.
