    A great entertaining movie

    I thought that the atmosphere created by this movie was spot on. I almost felt I was actually there in the 18th century...the deer hunting scene, for example... all those horse riders, galloping at full speed, and fox hounds hungrily in pursuit of their prey. Newgate prison - such a desperate, filthy place to be incarcerated in. The scene where Tom was hanged by the neck ... and then dramatically rescued at the very last moment...nail-biting stuff for sure! And all those spectators (played by the extras in the movie) as they eagerly watched and waited expectantly for the condemned to be hanged from the gallows...what a spectacle! All these characters, especially the ones played by the main actors, made it all seem so real. I'll definitely be watching this movie again sometime!

    Tom Jones (1963) MGM 24371DVD

    Historically important of course (Oscar, Bafta, Golden Globe for best film of 1963). Some aspects seem a little clunky these days, e.g. use of under cranking to speed up the action, but overall very entertaining and the hunt scene is spectacular by any standards.
