Synopsis
The East of Africa was placed as one of the most conflicted regions in the entire world. The countries within the region have all been affected by internal crisis, political uncertainty and border conflicts. 150 years ago, the Horn of Africa was politically affected by a series of political events including; the settlement of the European colonial powers to seek dominance in the Red Sea as the region maintains a strategic geopolitical importance, the Egyptian domination of the Nile river water, and the impacts of the Cold War in which the main countries in the region to switch sides at an important juncture, like the most recent U.S. government's 'War on Terror'. The East of Africa was initially a major regional commercial trade hub. For centuries, the region had served as trade route between the Arabs and the rest of Africa. The river Nile rose in the region and travelled to Egypt, connected all the states in a mortal association for survival. The eastern coast of the region hosts the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. The people of the region at that time were engaged in trade for centuries and as a result linked themselves to the Gulf countries and beyond. The truth about this region is that the region maintains a strategic geopolitical location which has attracted world powers, currently some of the world's great powers e.g. U.S. Japan, Spain, China France have established military and Naval bases in the tiny nation of the Horn of Africa, Djibouti. In recent years, the region has significantly suffered from the increasing terrorism as a result of the presence of world powers. The conflict in Yemen has had a major negative impact on the security trade through the Red Sea, making the trade between the East and West less secure than ever before. Another problem that the region is facing is the contradictory interpretation of Islam that some scholars are conducting which has disturbed the cohabitation among the different ethnic communities throughout East Africa.Geographically, the Horn is a fragile neighbourhood to Europe and has caused major problems to Europe such as increasing migrant going from the Horn to Europe, and the fact that many of these migrants from the horn are exploiting terrorism to Europe. Also, the Horn situates next to the Arab World, which often themselves face greater conflict and political instability. The Western powers including China have settled the region to counter terrorism and maintain its influence on the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and to sustain a momentum towards stability and coherence.
