I moved up to this processor from an AM2 1.8GHz. The speed difference is amazing. My motherboard manufacturer didn't list this as a working processor, so I had to do quite a bit of research to make sure, but wow, was it worth it! If you're thinking about upgrading to this processor, good luck. I was only able to find 1 (here). I called a dozen warehouses and internet suppliers. No one could get this thing. Also, if you do find one, make sure your motherboard can support it. There were two models of this processor released. A 125W one and a 140W. Again, if you can find one, it's cheaper than buying a new motherboard, processor and RAM and you won't be dissapointed by the speed.
Using an M2N32-SLI and a Corsair H50 with twin 80cfm fans in a push pull configuration I can run this all day at 3147MHz @ 45c and playing Crysis, a game which judging purely by core temperatures keeps a CPU running hot even when paused, at this conservative clock I have yet to exceed 58c. Settings 203, 15.5x, 1.3v. While I use a Core i7 965 Extreme and twin 6970's with my monitor for gaming I have to admit that this machine at LCD 1080p resolutions (much less demanding admittedly) provides a fluid, satisfying gaming experience. I was going to upgrade my main machine to a 2600K Sandy Bride w/ GTX 580's until I started researching this build and realized just how much overkill is involved in early adoption these days for gamers.
Pros: I overclocked this bad boy to 3.0 Ghz, then it laughed at me!!! It said, "Is that all you got"? Plenty of room for more OC!!!! I can't wait to see what the Matrox RT.X2 can do for me. Cons: Doesn't do dishes or laundry. Other Thoughts: I edit with Adobe CS4 Prod Premium. MPEG-2 transcode took about 15 min for 1 hour of video!!! Yeh, crazy fast!!! AND THAT WAS WHILE I WAS SURFING!!!! used to take 2.5 hrs. Foxconn "DESTROYER", 8GB G.SKILL 5-5-5-15, 1TB raid 0, 600GB raid 0, 1TB SATA, 550W Cooler Master, Cooler Master HAF 932 Enclosure.
When you no longer feel the need to be on the bleeding edge, purchasing a time-proven workhorse makes a lot of sense.
