This is a great addition to your defensive shotgun. You have to be able to see what you are shooting in a defensive situation. Most of these situations happen at night. A major problem in adding a light to your weapon is the unnatural mount. In many cases this adds weight, changes balance and can add snag points to something that you are trying to keep simple and streamlined. Enter the SureFire DSF 870. Although not the most cost effective option on the market, its benefits outweigh the cost. Life is a precious commodity and the additional cost is minimal when you consider a life. The DSF 870 is designed to replace the factory forend on your Remington 870. With one simple tool and about 20 minutes you can swap out the factory forend and install the DSF 870. After doing so you will have a dedicated streamlined mount on your forend that blends well with the original design of the gun. Features includes a toggle switch at the base of the light for power on and off as well as two palm switches that allow you to operate the light in momentary on off as well as continuous on and off. A screw off bezel in the light allows access to the 2 AA batteries needed to run the light. The grip texture is a soft composite that is comfortable and grippy. This is not the type of grip that will stick to clothing or become over grippy with use and I see that as a plus. The operation of the gun with the forend installed is unchanged from stock. I did feel a bit of a compression in the front of my pump hand as the gun recoils. I did not get this with the standard forend as there is no vertical extension in the front of the grip on the original to hold the light. I think this could be solved, by Surefire, by extending the flat part of the grip horizontally on the DSF 870 to allow for your full hand to lay flat. I have medium sized hands. I do not find this to be a negative as I only experienced this upon shooting the gun for extended periods of time during training classes. At regular trips to the range I was OK. I doubt you would find this on a lesser gauge due to less recoil. Although there is a small increase in weight it is not to excess and the placement of the weight on the gun is easily supported, within the pump hand, as not to effect the swing or balance. The light is bright and immediately responsive to the switches. The manufacturer claims 200-600- lumens. I found the 200 to be short of what I need for the flash bang effect but the 600 to be better. 200 was great for target ID. I could not find an adjustment for the beam width and locating the toggle between 600 and 200 lumens was not immediately obvious. Overall I would rate the DSF 870 very high in terms of wight, ergonomics and operation. If you have the money to spend this could be the best option for an integrated lighting solution to your tactical 12ga. defensive setup.Read full review

- very bulky / heavy forend, so the shotgun becomes much "nose" heavier even without the shells loaded - unecessary and usless "main switch" on the bottom of the forend, also the switch electronics drains the batteries if left at the "on" position - uncomfortable grip leading to difficult operation of the forend with high speed follow up shots - the light stopped functioning after only one use!

It is dependable compact and ready when and if needed. This is my second one of this brand. Really like the LED great improvement also like being able to turn of when carrying in case so battery won’t run down great improvements. It makes walking the fence line at night in the mountains at lot safer for me with big cats around and to protect family if needed. Never searching for flashlight in the middle of to night to check out noises just grab and go it is always there. Won’t be without one!

Not much I can say here you won't find in a google search or YouTube video. That said this forend is built like a tank. It feels nearly indestructible in your hands-not that you'll want to test that given what it costs. The light is very clear and holds up to the 200/600 lumen claims. Vey ergonomic and comfortable feel in hand. One drawback is how heavy it is. This thing easily adds more than a pound to the front end of you 870. All in all a good purchase. Expensive but you get what you pay for and it's meant for rough use.

The surefire light is used by law enforcement and this newest version is very very nice. 200lumens or 600lumens this thing is BRIGHT easily operated and it looks very good too. It appears to be robust and well made. Installation on the 870 is reasonably easy if you can take down your 870 you can have it on in 5 minutes.
