About this product

Product Information

Shorlisted for the BBC Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction Longlisted for the Royal Society Prize for Science Books Guardian columnist Dr Ben Goldacre takes us on a hilarious, invigorating and informative journey through the bad science we're fed by the worst of the hacks and the quacks... When Dr Ben Goldacre saw someone on daytime TV dipping her feet in an 'Aqua Detox' footbath, releasing her toxins into the water and turning it brown, he thought he'd try the same at home. 'Like some kind of Johnny Ball cum Witchfinder General', using his girlfriend's Barbie doll, he gently passed an electrical current through the warm salt water. It turned brown. In his words: 'before my very eyes, the world's first Detox Barbie was sat, with her feet in a pool of brown sludge, purged of a weekend's immorality.' Dr Ben Goldacre is the author of the 'Bad Science' column in the Guardian and his book is about all the 'bad science' we are constantly bombarded with in the media and in advertising. At a time when science is used to prove everything and nothing, everyone has their own 'bad science' moments - from the useless pie-chart on the back of cereal packets to the use of the word 'visibly' in cosmetics ads. This book will help people to quantify their instincts - that a lot of the so-called 'science' which appears in the media and in advertising is just wrong or misleading. Satirical and amusing - and unafraid to expose the ridiculous - it provides the reader with the facts they need to differentiate the good from the bad. Full of spleen, this is a hilarious, invigorating and informative journey through the world of 'bad science'.

If you're involved in healthcare or alternative therapy, read this.

Ben Goldacre dismantles the bluff and BS underlying 'nutritionists', homeopathy and other alternative therapies. Do not assume for one second however that he thinks modern drug companies are brilliant as he takes them seriously to task as well. This is popular science at its best; well written, informative, witty and coming from the heart as well as the head. All MPs, MEPs etc should be forced to read this (and examined on their knowledge) before being allowed any vote on medicine regulation. I am glad that Ben Goldacre wrote this. Sad that there was the need to do so.

    • Health scams revealed

A well referenced account of how some providers run their health businesses purely to make money, throwing up efficacy claims that are not backed by good evidence. In some cases obfuscation and falsehoods rule their publicity. A real eye opener on how some therapies are no more than fashions despite their medicalised language.

    • Perfect title

I have bought this book, as it is used for one of my Psychology modules. Once I picked it up, I couldn't get my nose out of it. It really helps you think outside of the box.

    • Bad Science is a good title.

Great that a medical doctor with proven scientific knowledge is exposing false diet and health claims made by those who are making profit from gullible or vulnerable people.

    • Oh my...!

Astonishing how much nonsense gets peddled, for commercial gain, and believed. Easy to read and written in a very amusing and lighthearted style, I’d recommend it. An eye-opener
