Flat as a strap (almost!)
My Rigol oscilloscope gets a fair amount of use and the probes get a fair amount of abuse. So much so that having damaged one of them I started looking for alternatives. I couldn’t readily find any replacements for the Rigol RP2200 at a sensible price, so I looked about for alternative brands. Hantek was getting some good reviews on YouTube so I thought I would give them a go. It occurred to me that probes from different manufacturers would likely have different characteristics, so I opted to buy two as a sort of a matched pair. The Hantek PP-200 200 MHz Oscilloscope X1-X10 Probe Kit looked like a bargain, so purchased it through eBay. On first inspection, I was quite surprised by the probes. For a little under £10 each, the probes looked to be pretty good quality. That wasn’t matched ... My Rigol oscilloscope gets a fair amount of use and the probes get a fair amount of abuse. The Hantek PP-200 200 MHz Oscilloscope X1-X10 Probe Kit looked like a bargain, so purchased it through eBay. On first inspection, I was quite surprised by the probes. For a little under £10 each, the probes looked to be pretty good quality. That wasn’t matched by the paperwork that came with them, which was pretty thin, but I guess if you want hi-tech probes with high levels of specification then you need to spend a few more pennies. The budget nature was seen in the accessories pack too. I wasn’t expecting a BNC/Probe adaptor at this price, but I was expecting a short-tail ground clip. Not included, however. On the plus side, the compensation tool supplied is excellent. I’ve not had any other probes to compare with the Rigol probes my DS1054Z came with, so I was interested to see how they compared. While my ‘scope is purportedly capable of 50MHz bandwidth it has been uplifted to 100MHz, but to be fair to the probes, the ‘scope has not been calibrated to that level, so any results can be taken with a pinch of salt. However, using my SDG2122X, performing a 1-second sweep between 100KHz and 60MHz I can see that the Hantek PP-200 probes performed excellently. While they appear to roll off in terms of bandwidth a little earlier than the Rigol probes, up to that point the reported voltage is pretty flat, where the Rigol probes are less consistent towards the upper frequencies. I’d love to get hold of some expensive probes for comparison, but for £10 a probe, I’m very happy with these Hantek PP-200’s
