    Narex Gouges

    Without exception, all of the Narex products I have acquired over the past few years have been wonderful in quality and ease of use, I have fallen in love with these gouges. They carve out spoons and ladles with less effort than anything else I have owned. The hornbeam handles are awesome in the hand and allow for delicate use as well as mallet carving. I have moved all of my Narex chisels and gouges to my demo toolbox for when my SCA group does demos at schools or art fairs because they have that "ol:timey" look that folks enjoy seeing used. It will take me time to save the money, but I intend to obtain a complete set of the Narex brand chisels because of their excellent quality and the hornbeam handles.     Good steel, but...

    Over all this is god value, they are firmer gouges and are designed for use with a mallet. The edge is ground to around 32 - 35 degrees which is strong enough for coarse work but not for use by hand. I reground these down to 20 deg and finished them off on stone and they now work really well by hand and yet keep a good edge. The steel is tough and needed work to get a sharp edge, BUT it maintains it really well. Gave the 4 stars because of the above, but good tools.
