Three highly-acclaimed directors - Italy's Ermanno Olmi (The Tree of Wooden Clogs), Iran's Abbas Kiarostami (Taste of Cherry, Ten) and Britain's Ken Loach (Kes, Sweet Sixteen, Ae Fond Kiss) - join forces to direct three interwoven stories that take place on an intercity train trip from Austria to Italy. Olmi starts the journey with an ageing biochemist leaving Vienna, whose reveries about the joys of love are kindled by a snippet of music. Next, Kiarostami takes us through the Ialian countryside as the patience of a young Italian man is tested by the almost-comic resilience of a general's widow, and finally, in typical Loach style, a trio of Celtic fans find out more about modern Europe than they expect as they arrive in Rome.
