"Pesci rossi" si intitola una fortunata raccolta di scritti di Emilio Cecchi, che vide la luce nel 1920. Pochi anni prima Cecchi, in occasione della mostra della Secessione Romana, aveva avuto modo di ammirare I pesci rossi di Matisse: al quadro, così moderno nell'estetica delle forme e nella profondità delle allusioni, e alla mostra, lo scrittore dedicò un breve articolo e qualche annotazione sparsa dei suoi taccuini, suscitando l'interesse e la curiosità dei suoi lettori, di altri critici del suo tempo, e perfino della famiglia reale. Sì che da allora, e per qualche tempo, pesci rossi allusero proprio a quei brevi saggi, a quelle colte divagazioni del tipo ricordato.
