About this product

Product Information

The vivid voices that speak from these pages are not those of historians or scholars. They are the voices of ordinary men and women who experienced--and helped to win--the most devastating war in history, in which between 50 and 60 million lives were lost. Focusing on the citizens of four towns-- Luverne, Minnesota; Sacramento, California; Waterbury, Connecticut; Mobile, Alabama;-- The War follows more than forty people from 1941 to 1945. Woven largely from their memories, the compelling, unflinching narrative unfolds month by bloody month, with the outcome always in doubt. All the iconic events are here, from Pearl Harbor to the liberation of the concentration camps--but we also move among prisoners of war and Japanese American internees, defense workers and schoolchildren, and families who struggled simply to stay together while their men were shipped off to Europe, the Pacific, and North Africa. Enriched by maps and hundreds of photographs, including many never published before, this is an intimate, profoundly affecting chronicle of the war that shaped our world.

"Ken Burns has done it again. He has given us an intimate, memorable, and provocative portrait of America in World War II-the valor and victory, sacrifice and shame of ordinary Americans, north, south, east, and west. This is a treasure." -Tom Brokaw "Heartrending . . . Unique not only among previous volumes that have accompanied Burns's documentaries but among just about any book on World War II . . . • Outstanding Account of World War II

This book is certianly the best account of World War II that I have ever read. Over the past few years I have read various books about one of the greatest wars in all of history, and there is no doubt that this is the best of all I've read. The authors do a tremendous job of communicating life on the home front as well as the battle front. The audience are able to get inside the lives of those who had to suffer the war, and at times it feels as if the reader is experiencing it himself. No book can ever do justice to what the war was really like, but this book enables readers feel the suffering of soldiers who saw their friends die right next to them and fear that the next knock on the door may be one delivering a telegram that a loved one is dead. The photographs effectively ...

  • The War by Ken Burns/Geoffrey Ward

It is important for every American citizen to reocognize the sacrifices made for the life we enjoy. The text and photographs in this book reflect the horrible price America's fighting military made to achieve a victory for our way of life. I do not know how anyone could experience this book without being forever grateful. The book is very well done, in fact the best and most comprehensive history of the war that I have ever found. If you have only one history book from WW II this should be that book.
