A daft yarn from an age that's vanished
If you like silly stories this is definitely the book for you. An utterly unbelievable careering plot that interweaves Jules Verne type scenarios, with a few altercations with masticating cannibals, prehistoric monsters, and daredevil antics, written in the style and panache of the mid 19th century that is hard to swallow. It's no wonder this author is unheard of. I struggled to read it and only got half way, before completely giving up in resignation. It simply doesn't captivate the reader or pose any intelligent threads in the highly confused plot. As a youth I liked adventure stories (especially Jules Verne) and devoured them avidly. This is a sorry disappointment for a novel and you will be bored and frustrated with it by page 10. The language is too flowery and the sub-plots too banal ... If you like silly stories this is definitely the book for you.
