About this product

Product Information

Beautifully repackaged reissue of Penelope Lively's classic memoir The only child of divorced parents, Penelope Lively was often sent to stay at her grandparents' country house Golsoncott. Years later, as the house was sold out of the family, she began to piece together the lives of those she knew fifty years before. In a needlework sampler, she sees her grandmother and the wartime children that she sheltered under her roof in 1940. Potted meat jars remind her of the ritual of doing the flowers for church. The smell of the harness room brings her Aunt Rachel - avant-garde artist, fervent horserider - vividly back to life. In A House Unlocked, Penelope Lively delves into the domestic past of her former home, and tells of her own youth and the contrasts between life today and the way they lived then.

The four books came fast, with a tracking number, and they were carefully packed. The price was excellent for 4 books in almost new condition. A slight issue has arisen about one of the books, but the communication with the seller was excellent and seller promptly solved the issue for me in a positive way by offering a partial refund. As a buyer, I feel very valued by the seller and I will certainly buy other items from this seller again. Very professional and serious seller. Thank you!

Perfect seller, would use again. The book was securely packed and protected - super neat packing too, better than my Christmas present attempts! Good price, and postage too. Exactly as pictured in the listings. Regards.

  • An excellent title as an early life is truly unlocked.

Autobiographical I have found it a compelling read. about the author's early life when she visited her grandmother in Exmoor. It has reminded me of so many things, holidays in that area and also Russia as Penelope Lively writes about the Russian visitors to her grandmother's house. The book is good value.

  • Excellent writing and very interesting if you know West Somerset

A great writer. I bought this book because it concerns a house which it turns out is vey close to where I live. She talks about many of the places that I know well. This may have made the book more readable for me but may not be as appealing to anyone who doesn't know the area although it was recommended to me by someone who loved the book and live in Essex.
