About this product

Product Information

A world expert presents a sympathetic exploration of the causes of trauma and the new treatments making it possible for sufferers to reclaim their lives What causes people to continually relive what they most want to forget, and what treatments could help restore them to a life with purpose and joy? Here, Dr Bessel van der Kolk offers a new paradigm for effectively treating traumatic stress. Neither talking nor drug therapies have proven entirely satisfactory. With stories of his own work and those of specialists around the globe, The Body Keeps the Score sheds new light on the routes away from trauma - which lie in the regulation and syncing of body and mind, using sport, drama, yoga, mindfulness, meditation and other routes to equilibrium.

Essential reading for anyone suffering from trauma related issues.

I'm three quarters of the way through this book, it is both a fantastic and compelling read. It gives a fascinating insight into the workings of the brain and how trauma affects those workings. It has tragic and sometimes frightening real life testimonies that have reduced me to tears at times, there are also paragraphs that are light bulb moments where you make sense of why certain things have happened or why certain behaviours are affected. It never ceases to amaze me as to how cruel human beings can be to one another and how that can leave a lasting legacy that can take years to surface. I know I'll finish this book and start it all over again as there is so much to take in. I would recommend the book to anyone who wants a better understanding of a trauma that may affect them.

  • Most critical review

Good but only deals with the most extreme examples of trauma

It's good but unlike Peter Levine's 'Waking the tiger,' it tends to make the same points throughout the book and doesn't have the practical exercises that ,'Waking the tiger' has.

  • A compelling overview of psychiatry and psychology

This book has been recommended by trainers on my Cognitive Analytical Therapy course and EMDR training course. I have finally got round to reading it and it is easy to read and compelling, unlike most text books. It is a book that sums up practising psychiatry and psychology over the last 40 years. A really good overview and relates to my experience of working in mental health for 20 years. Mental illness is usually about trauma. That’s what we need to target.

  • ptsd

If like me you have c-ptsd and have a need to understand the why's and wherefore's, this book is for you. I believe understanding a condition is key to recovery, or just finding out why you even react or behave in certain ways. I wanted to improve my quality of life and be able to make changes and have found this very interesting and encouraging.

  • Great elaboration on trauma.

This book is one of the best books I have ever read. It elaborates so thoroughly on how trauma affects our brains, which in essence has a tremendous effect on our everyday lives, general human interactions, and current and/or future relationships. Excellent book and I highly recommend it to all whom personally have been through traumas (in childhood and/or adulthood), and those who are particularly interested in how human body works. I'd give this book 10 ☆ if i could.
