Von diesem Buch, erstmals 1904 erschienen, wurden in den ersten 4 Auflagen mehr als 30.000 Exemplare verkauft. Die vorliegende und überarbeitete Ausgabe erschien 1926. Was ist das Erfolgsgeheimnis des kleinen Werkes? Der Autor, Gartenbaudirektor in Eisenach, beschreibt umfassend und sehr präzise, aber in einer für die damalige Zeit eher knappen Sprache, wie es jedem gelingen kann, in einem wenige hundert Quadratmeter großen Garten den täglichen Bedarf an Gemüse für die ganze Familie anzubauen. Seine Ausführungen sind auch heute noch sehr aktuell: neben der Versorgung mit biologisch angebautem Gemüse kann die vorgestellte Bewirtschaftung des Gartens auch eine schöne Einsparung der Haushaltskosten bringen. Mit einem ausführlichen alphabetischen Nachschlageteil, in dem die wesentlichen Pflanzen, Schädlinge und Bewirtschaftungsmethoden behandelt werden. Ein Buch für alle, die an Selbstversorgung interessiert sind.
