Retired FBI agent Will Graham (William L. Petersen) returns to action to hunt down a serial killer by using his ability to get inside the psychopath's mind. However, it was this ability that drove him into retirement in the first place. The process of tracking and capturing the infamous Hannibal Lecter (Brian Cox) took a tremendous psychic toll on Graham, causing him to spent time in a mental hospital. With another madman on the loose, Graham has no choice but to return to duty, though he knows that it might cost him his family and his sanity. To get the old mind-set back, Graham visits Hannibal Lecter in his high-security jail cell. However, the manipulative Lecter plays both sides and warns the new killer that Graham is on his trail, telling him to destroy Graham's family to protect himself. In order to save his own family, Graham must risk everything to once again enter into the mind of the criminally insane. With MANHUNTER, Mann raises the bar for serial killer films, imbuing his killer with an almost sympathetic quality while keeping him extremely menacing and clearly dangerous. Based on the Thomas Harris novel RED DRAGON, which serves as the prequel to THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, MANHUNTER is a masterpiece of gripping storytelling and psychological horror.

    Atmospheric serial killer story !

    Best Hannibal Lecter story ever !!!! Slow burn, a touch of mystery keep in suspense with a great cinematography for the genre and a unique soundtrack who brings you deep to the atmosphere of this tense tracking serial killer story !!!!

    "One Of Michael Mann's Best!"

    William Petersen, Dennis Farina, Brian Cox, Joan Allen and Tom Noonan star in Michael Mann's 1986 thriller based on the Thomas Harris novel, "Red Dragon." A retired FBI agent is sent to find a killer. This comes 5 years before "Silence of the Lambs" featuring Hannibal. I think this film is one of Michael's best that's very underrated and so is Brian's great performance as the original Hannibal. William and Tom are also great and I think they should've kept Tom's scenes with the tattoos. I recommend this 2-disc set that has 2 cuts of the film and some neat extras.

    Michael Mann (HEAT, THE INSIDER) directs this stylish and gut-wrenching film adaptation of Thomas Harris' novel RED DRAGON, the first in the Hannibal Lecter series and possibly the best by far. FBI Agent Will Graham (the underrated William Petersen) comes out of retirement to catch a dangerous serial killer called "The Tooth Fairy" (Tom Noonan, at his creepiest) with the help of the imprisoned Hannibal (played masterfully by Brian Cox). Unfortunally, Graham must enter the mind of the serial killer in order to catch his prey. Will he ever come out? Find out for yourself!     first movie to Hannibal series

    I watched this movie years ago and most people do not know it is the start to Hannibal series. My husband had never seen it I was so glad I found this one.

    Manhunter DVD

    This is a must watch and a good movie to compare with "silence of the lambs". This was years before that movie and was based on the same novel. Very Interesting specialy for Michael Mann fans!
