    Great Classic Sci-Fi Film in a 2-DVD '50th Anniversary Collectors' Edition' (2006)

    This early science fiction classic (1956) has been described as an adaptation of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'. Starring Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Nielsen & a teenaged Anne Francis, it is the story of a rescue mission sent to find what happened to an earlier expedition to the 4th planet of the star Altair. Dr. Morbius (Pidgeon) and his 18-yr-old daughter Altaira (Francis) are the only survivors. The crew of the flying-saucer-shaped interstellar cruiser are stunned when Dr. Morbius informs them he has discovered Altair-4 was once the home of a super-advanced civilization of a non-human race called the Krell. High production values are seen throughout the film, with Special Effects provided by Disney's animation studio (no computer F/X in 1956!). Often cited as the greatest sci-fi landmark film ...

Watching it now you are still thrilled at it's mind blowing special effects, huge ideas, and great story telling. A movie that will always stand tall as a classic. It was one of three fantastic Science Fiction films that took us far into space. Forbidden Planet was made in the 50's. It ruled as the ultimate science fiction adventure like today's Star Wars. the other two sci-fi films that blew the public's minds were "This Island Earth" and "Planet of the Vampires".     A True Science Fiction Classic

    If you have never seen Forbidden Planet, then you should buy it immediately, and watch it asap. It is an extraordinary movie, a SF retelling of Shakespeare's The Tempest. Particularly amazing is it was made in the mid-fifties at the height of the bug-eyed monster movie craze. This is an intelligent story in the vein of Asimov, Heinlein and Ellison. The soundtrack is the first all electronic score for a movie ever created (no music, just wonderfully strange sounds and alien burbling). The acting is good, particularly Walter Pidgeon as the otherworldly Prospero and Anne Francis as his innocent but coquettish daughter. Leslie Nielsen's space crew is a little ramped up on testosterone, and much of their attitude toward Francis' character is pretty sexist, but it WAS the 50s. Watching the movie ...

    A sci-fi classic. The used 50th Anniversary version I purchased also had the old Invisible Boy movie with it. Forbidden Planet is a thoughtful classic science fiction movie I enjoy watching from time to time. And there is Robbie the Robot.
