About this product

Product Information

The "brilliantly realized" ( The New York Times Book Review ) breakthrough novel from visionary author Neal Stephenson, a modern classic that predicted the metaverse and inspired generations of Silicon Valley innovators Hiro lives in a Los Angeles where franchises line the freeway as far as the eye can see. The only relief from the sea of logos is within the autonomous city-states, where law-abiding citizens don't dare leave their mansions. Hiro delivers pizza to the mansions for a living, defending his pies from marauders when necessary with a matched set of samurai swords. His home is a shared 20 X 30 U-Stor-It. He spends most of his time goggled in to the Metaverse, where his avatar is legendary. But in the club known as The Black Sun, his fellow hackers are being felled by a weird new drug called Snow Crash that reduces them to nothing more than a jittering cloud of bad digital karma (and IRL, a vegetative state). Investigating the Infocalypse leads Hiro all the way back to the beginning of language itself, with roots in an ancient Sumerian priesthood. He'll be joined by Y.T., a fearless teenaged skateboard courier. Together, they must race to stop a shadowy virtual villain hell-bent on world domination.

    Best Stepheson Novel

Great speculative science fiction, and a fairly large but not overwhelmingly huge cast of interesting characters. Futuristic and gritty, and still mind-blowing, all at the same time. Cool motorcycles, sword fights, super-skateboards, stylized cyberspace, evil guys, with a healthy dose of Mesopotamian legend/pseudo-history thrown in. This was my first Stephenson novel, and have been re-reading it over the years and recommend it to friends when I can (then try to buy a new book when my friends are slow in giving it back!)

  • A Plausible, Fast-Paced, Entertaining Science Fiction

Neal Stephenson's cyberpunk novel, "Snow Crash," plunges the reader into a not-too-distant, science fiction future. The book is set in the arena of California- sort of. America has become a "Burbclave" patchwork of city-states, the Mafia controls pizza delivery, and the Internet- existing as the Metaverse- looks something like every computer scientist's wetdream. Hiro Protagonist- hacker, samurai swordsman, and pizza-delivery driver- follows clues from the Bible, ancient Sumer and high technology, as he tries to thwart an attempt to take control of civilization. When he logs onto Metaverse- an imaginary place entered via computer, much like the Sims, avatars and all- Hiro encounters Juanita Marquez, a "radical" Catholic and computer whiz. She warns him to avoid the emonymous drug Snow ...

  • Good reading...

I ordered this book on the suggestion of a friend, and it's turned out to be a very good read. So far I'm quite happy with it. The story chronicles the life of a freelance hacker who starts the story as a "Deliverator" for the mob's pizza franchise called Cosa Nostra Pizza Delivery in Southern California. From what I could tell of the world he lives in, it's in an early 21st century United States in which the government has collapsed and now comprised of many corporate run city states throughout the former nation. I'm still in the first few chapters, so I couldn't really say much more about the story, but so far it's been very well written and enjoyable.

  • Costra Nostra Pizza

With characters like Hiro Protagonist --hacker, samurai swordsman, and pizza-delivery driver, how can you not like it? It has designer drugs gone riot (Snow Crash) and lots of tongue-in-cheek cyberpunk humor. Less pretentious than Gibson- I love his work, but it's not light readint- it's worth whatever bean or ruble you have to toss to get it. If you don't like the genre, I would still recommend it as a fun read.

  • Beautiful book
