About this product

Product Information

`If I die,' Egan Welch wrote in a note to his father, `it is not alcohol that killed me. It's something else.' Kicking the Black Mamba is an unforgettable many-layered story of the death of a son. It is a vivid, haunting personal tragedy, but Welch explores its roots in generations of Irish lives scarred by shame and disgrace, and reflects on the lawless energies that may be unleashed now that the constraining institutions and rituals of church and magic have lost their hold on people's minds. It is a frightening confession of a man who fears his own complicity in his son's alcohol addiction. But it is also a love story, the story of `a boy's love for his father, and a father's helpless love for his son.'

  • Wonderful book from the heart

This book was written by the father of a friend of mine and it is a powerful story of a family which carried a long and heavy difficult journey with a dear loved one. As it claims it is not merely the story of someone that was lost (and that they were, I imagine, a very big loss to the world) but it is also the journey that the family went on before that and a story of love. This is an amazing family that loved despite great pressure and pain. Trying to understand the depths of their son's pain, amongst his many gifts to the world. It is not an easy book to read however but it is one that will stay with I think it is a story about a family as much as any battles with alcohol. They are authentic. The writer has written many books on an academic level but this one is deeply from the heart. A ...
